Joe W. Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 I've been asked a couple of times if I can cut metal with the scroll saw. I see there are blades available for cutting metal. And I'm curious if anyone here has experience in cutting metal - I don't recall seeing any cut patterns done in metal. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
barb.j.enders Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 Steve Good did a pattern, years ago, that was in a thin brass. It was a "charm" to attach to a purse. Joe W. and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
Dan Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 Not sure how large your project may be, but Randy, aka @hotshot, does great work with coins. He visits here frequently and may reply or you can message him. He's his gallery: https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/profile/1770-hotshot/?tab=node_gallery_gallery. OCtoolguy and Joe W. 1 1 Quote
kmmcrafts Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 Can't remember if it was here or on FB but a few years ago someone made a sign for a ( I think it was ) auto repair shop out of diamond plate aluminum nearly 1/8 thick I think.. Was really neat and they said it actually sawed better than they had expected. I haven't tried anything other than wood products.. but had thought about trying thin metal ornaments.. just never got to it yet. LOL Joe W. and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
Bill WIlson Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 Thin, non-ferrous metals can be cut with a scroll saw. I can't imagine the filings would be much fun to deal with. Perhaps if one had a saw and dust collection dedicated to cutting metal, it might make it more attractive. I have some copper flashing that I've toyed with the idea of using to cut Christmas ornaments, but I really don't relish the idea of the shavings all over my saw. OCtoolguy and Joe W. 1 1 Quote
kmmcrafts Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 Bill brings up a good point, I wouldn't attempt this with a saw like the DW and Ex, and Pegas type saws where there are bearings right near the blade chucks.. I'm not sure on the Hegner but I'm assuming they're similar to the Hawk and the bearings are at the back portion of the saw so the metal wouldn't be falling right into the saws bearings like those other saws.. Not sure about Hegners again but the Hawk saws you could buy a kit with water pump to cut ceramic and other materials that would require the water. I believe the pump and drain pan with maybe a filter system to keep clean water flowing.. I'm not sure they offer this any more and don't imagine they sold all that many of them. Joe W. 1 Quote
