Tallbald Posted March 5, 2023 Report Posted March 5, 2023 Walnut oil from the grocery store has been suggested elsewhere for food safe wood finishing. Apparently it does harden and has some protective properties but I've never used it. Thinking here of a low sheen on species puzzles. But then again, how could that be used with a child-safe stain or paint accents on a puzzle or toy? Don. OCtoolguy and scrollingforsanity 2 Quote
barb.j.enders Posted March 6, 2023 Report Posted March 6, 2023 I would think this is an expensive option. Try the mineral oil/beeswax "butter" it will be kid friendly. I have used Tung OIl in the past. Once cured, it is also kid friendly. scrollingforsanity 1 Quote
kmmcrafts Posted March 6, 2023 Report Posted March 6, 2023 I'd not use walnut oil for sure as many people / kids have allergies to nuts.. I found a recipe on a toy making site years ago and have used and made a lot of it myself over the years.. I put a link to how to make it on my website / blog. https://www.kevskrafts.com/blog There also could be allergies to the mineral oil and beeswax.. so if selling these puzzles I'd make sure the ingredients are marked or known by purchaser.. Just my 2 cents.. Not that the kids are supposed to be eating the pieces, LOL.. I disclose the ingredients and also have a disclaimer to keep out of reach of small children due to choking hazards. Tallbald Posted March 6, 2023 Author Report Posted March 6, 2023 Points I had not considered but sure appreciate you enlightening me! Thanks to you all. Don. kmmcrafts 1 Quote
dgman Posted March 6, 2023 Report Posted March 6, 2023 If it is not designed as a finish, it is not recommended. All finishes sold in the U.S. are kid safe once cured. Just read the label for cure times. Gonzo and kmmcrafts 2 Quote
jollyred Posted March 6, 2023 Report Posted March 6, 2023 I have used walnut oil to finish wood turnings. It is sold as a finish, so it should be safe once cured. Here is a link to it: https://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/41/3880/mahoneys-finishes-Utility-Finish?term=walnut+oil+mahoney&term=walnut oil mahoney Tom kmmcrafts 1 Quote
Matt B Posted March 6, 2023 Report Posted March 6, 2023 Mahoney’s Walnut oil is treated to remove the chemical that causes allergies. It is used extensively by Woodturners for a bowl and platter finish. kmmcrafts 1 Quote
