ChelCass Posted April 5, 2023 Report Posted April 5, 2023 However it is wood working related. Beginning of our chicken coop. Got it partially framed before the rains. Second day of raining but from Thursday on it is forecasted at sunny and going into the 70's next week. First picture if the front and second is the side. It is 8x4 as I am only have 5 pullets but I have room for a couple more. Maybe a Roo. It is on a cement foundation left over from our old barn (hence rat deterrent). Scrappile Posted April 5, 2023 Report Posted April 5, 2023 that is going to be a nice chicken condo. I really miss having chicken. Been thinking about having them again, but my wife wants to move to town. I do not belong in town. ChelCass 1 Quote

Most don't allow roosters. Quote
JessL Posted April 5, 2023 Report Posted April 5, 2023 I've been seriously thinking about getting chickens. I live out in the boonies so it is doable, just haven't made the jump yet. Looking forward to seeing the finished project! ChelCass 1 Quote
ChelCass Posted April 18, 2023 Author Report Posted April 18, 2023 Need to add couple window, the laying boxes on the back, a couple of trim pieces and paint to match the rest of the outbuildings. Used a 10x10dog kennel for their outside run. Coop is sitting on a cement slab that I will add a couple inches of dirt to. Couple of the girls outside enjoying their first dust bath. Scrappile Posted April 18, 2023 Report Posted April 18, 2023 (edited) Do you have raccoons in your area. if so, I suggest making if raccoon/skunk proof... They got into mine and killed all the chickens, just for fun I guess, they did not eat them. Very nice place for them. I miss having chickens. Maybe again someday. Dak0ta52 Posted April 18, 2023 Report Posted April 18, 2023 I guess if Judy is going to start raising chickens to have eggs, she'll be rich by the end of the year. Your coop turned out nice. I'm fortunate that I have two sources for eggs. My niece lives across the street and has chickens. She usually gets about two dozen per day. My other source is from a guy that retired from the company I work with. He has a egg farm and gets 30,000 eggs per day. What he is able to provide are the double yokes that he says he can't sell. He gets a couple hundred per day. He'll bring a days collection by my office and the employees here snatch them up. ChelCass 1 Quote
ChelCass Posted April 18, 2023 Author Report Posted April 18, 2023 (edited) We do have a few raccoons and skunks. The coop is critter proof. There is hardware cloth all along the bottom and under the eaves. The coop is fenced into our backyard, When I let our Rottie out the first place she goes is to check the Chickens. The Coop itself sits on cement so critter can't dig underneath. I had chickens since I was a toddler so it nothing new to me. There is also a 10x10 fence section (part of dog kennel) over top and the small section by the Coop will be covered with Deer Netting to keep the hawks and such out from above put we are putting a tarp overtop for Shade. Plus the chickens are locked up every night. Double yolks are considered a Premium in my area. Everybody loves them especially if they are in brown eggs. Edited April 18, 2023 by ChelCass Quote
Gene Howe Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 How in the world can one tell if an egg is a double yolker before it's cracked? Quote

kmmcrafts Posted April 20, 2023 Report Posted April 20, 2023 Brother-in-law got 7 chickens last spring.. and he's getting tired of figuring out how to use / get rid of the eggs, LOL.. he's getting like 3 dozen eggs a week. I've been thankful not to have to buy eggs though. I do buy a bag of feed every now and then because we kind of agreed to go in together on the chickens / eggs. We are feeding around 4 and sometimes 5 families with eggs. Nice that they keep the bug population down and some other benefits to them besides just eggs. Kinda think about getting some myself just to help with the ticks and spiders, LOL... However I wouldn't know what to do with yet more eggs.. .. Suppose Etsy would let me sell them.. I don't think they're handmade since chickens only have feet.. I suppose I could hand feed the them so it's kinda handmade then? ChelCass 1 Quote

Put a sign out by the road *Eggs for Sale* If you add the price to the sign (make sure it is at least 25 to 50 cents less then the stores price and you will have no problem selling them. Also you can post for free on Facebook Marketplace just make sure to note your location. Edited April 21, 2023 by ChelCass kmmcrafts 1 Quote
