Dan Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 Haven't felt much like scrolling lately so I turned a few pens. First is a segmented pen, which are always fun to make. Second is a prairie rattlesnake skin pen. First time I tried turning one of these. I'm happy with both. Thanks for looking. Quote
WolfmoonCT Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 Was that a PSI skin blank Dan? I ordered one, but wasn't impressed so far. The skin overlapped, so the pen I wanted to use it for, a .30cal twist pen, the skin went right out to the edge of the bushing. The acrylic also split off of a section of it, and the skin under it was not gluded down to the brass.. The are supposed to be sending me a new one at the end of the month to try. Quote
Dan Posted March 10, 2012 Author Report Posted March 10, 2012 Was that a PSI skin blank Dan? No, I bought this from Arizona Silhouette. They did a nice job hiding the seam. They said to sand it near size then put it on the lathe and sand. I used a carbide tool and took slow passes and it worked great, much better than sanding it all the way. The instructions did say that some of the chemicals used in the tanning process made it difficult for the resin to adhere to the skin. I'm looking into buying some snake skin and try making them myself. Next ones you do, after you sand the ends down to size, put a little thin CA around where the skin meets the tube. I think that may help a little bit also. Hope the next one works better for you. Quote
toolbeltman Posted March 10, 2012 Report Posted March 10, 2012 Nice work on the pens Dan...thanks for sharing. Quote
WolfmoonCT Posted March 14, 2012 Report Posted March 14, 2012 I finally got one of my skin blanks turned.. took tiny cuts.. about twice as long as normal to bring it down to size. Left it slightly over sized at the ends, and soem 150 grit sandpaper brought them down where I needed them to be. Thanks for your suggestions Dan. Quote
