FrankEV Posted February 22, 2024 Report Posted February 22, 2024 I know there are a couple of Roaring Bear Patterns available, but I was wondering if I could create my own from an Image that I found on-line that I liked.ย However, the Image is very dark and Inkscape was unable to reproduce a SVG trace that was even close to what the Image was.ย ย ย Since I happen to have a WACOM drawing tablet, I decided to give it a try and mechanically trace the Image using the Inkscape โDraw Freehand Lineโ command.ย The tablet, with its pen, is easier than using a mouse, but I thought it would be easier than it was.ย However, after a few false starts and some practice, I was able to do a reasonable job doing the trace.ย This is much like doing a trace using tissue paper and pencil, but the results are very ragged โmany-nodeโ lines! ย The eye/hand coordination required to use the pen is even greater than what is needed when cutting with the scroll saw! ย And, of course, a new (to me) method of creating a SVG trace involved the need to employ other commands I had not previously used.ย Specifically, the โPathโ sub-commands โCombineโ and โSimplifyโ. ย I used the โSimplifyโ command to smooth out the โmany-nodesโ ragged trace line. ย At this point, the pattern is very much like what Inscape normally makes when using the โTrace Bitmapโ command but it still required some tweaking using the โEdit paths by nodesโ command to create a scrollable pattern.ย Little by little Iโm learning more ways to use Inkscape. ย So I welcome any comments about, the methods I used and/or results I created, making this Pattern.ย ย ย Here is an Image and a PDF file of the pattern.ย Bear Roaring 2 - Pattern.pdf Me and my buddy, Scrappile, ChelCass and 3 others 2 1 3 Quote
Bo Liljeborn Posted February 22, 2024 Report Posted February 22, 2024 I like the patterns but sense I am a rookie I have to ask, first my I use your pattern for cuttings? Second if so should I cut out the white or grey areas, I now itโs a rookie question but thatโs what I am? OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Any patterns I post are for anyones/everyones use!ย ย You are certainly welcome to cut it but just know it is not a easy pattern, especially around the bears mouth and nose.ย If you mess it up, just chalk it up to the learning curve. Specifically, for this pattern you would cut out the grey.ย Just understand that for any pattern you look at, look to see what must stay together and what drops out when it is cut, and that will tell you which you need to cut out.ย ย Not a strict rule but, I have found that patterns that have NO border, the cut out areas are usualy the shaded areas and, very often with patterns that have a border or frame as part of the pattern, the shaded area is to be saved and the non-shaded (white) area is cut away.ย ย We were all rookies in the beginning.ย Patience, practice, purserverence and more practice is all the is needed to become a good scroller. Enjoy! ย OCtoolguy and flarud 1 1 Quote

You are so right it is a step in my learning and sometimes you have to challenge yourself and often you mess it up, but as long as one learn from ones mistakes it help you develop your skills so I will give it a go and probably mess it up totally but I have a great wood burner so it wonโt be wasted OK that was a good tip Howe to know what areas to cut out, I will keep what in mind next time i looking on patterns.
