A friend had the same problem with a DeWalt 788.  

As Dan said, heat the link to soften it so you can slip it on.  When it cools, it should tighten up.

But, if that does not work, then wrap a layer or so of tape around the nipple to build it up, then do the previous step.

I tried the heating it trick and went to far.  Couldn't get it back on at all. Asked my husband to remove the link I messed up for me.  He went out to the shop later and worked on it while I was doing something else and apparently fixed it.  He's not home a the moment to properly thank him.  Not sure what he did but I am happy now!
