Hi

I wanted to ask if anyone knows what would be the best medium to form a 'Dam' around a crack in a turned piece of wood?  My first thought was plasticine.  The table lamp is still attached to my lathe and I'd like to keep it on the lathe whilst I pour the poly acrylic.  Any thoughts would be really welcome.

thanks

Hi Dan and thanks

The thing is I have turned the piece, so the cracks run top to bottom and I need the acrylic to stay in place, that said I think if I build a wall with plasticine and then 'line' it with tape, that might work, as I'm concerned with the plasticine melting.  I'll post a few pics (should have done that first off, sorry)  On reflection and a good nights sleep, I realise I can't keep the piece mounted to the lathe for obvious reasons.

Another option would be to pack the crack with saw dust from same kind of wood, and apply thin CA glue. This will harden and be close to same color of the wood. I have used this method many times. Then turn as normal

Thanks Clayton, if the acrylic test I'm going to try doesn't work, then I think your solution would be next.  I've bought some resin along with some shiny gold coloured flakes, that I was hoping would look like gold veins in the wood, well that was the plan, if it comes out like that I'll be well pleased.  Thanks both for the excellent ideas guys.  :)

Gary, if you use acrylic or poly resin to fill the crack, try mixing in some gold Pearlex. This stuff you can get from Hobby Lobby and a little goes a long way. If you want it to look like gold veins, Pearlex is my first thought.

I'll admit I was ignorant to plasticine, but after a Google search I'm a bit smarter today than I was yesterday. Thank you.

Hi Dan, thanks, I've bought some 'Metalic Jewels' from a company called CFS (www.cfsnet.co.uk) there basically tiny gold coloured bits.  Sorry about not explaining myself too well and thanks again for the help.  If it doesn't all go horribly wrong I'll post some pictures when it's done.  I think Pearlex would be a good product to use, I'll have to get some as I quite like the idea of combining 'natural and synthetic, theres quite a choice too.
