OutoftheWoodwork Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 Here is my other obsession-routing signs, and a couple of my wine bottle holders. The bottle holders I've done have four shapes: Michigan, Standard, Wedding Bells, and a Wine Bottle. Like I've said, at least 90% of my work gets some sort of scroll work. although people have said I could just use my jigsaw I like using my scroll saw for cutting the shapes of them. Especially since I got my Excallibur; using him, there's very little sanding. It's amazing. bobscroll, Fab4, Travis and 2 others 5 Quote
Phantom Scroller Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 They all look great pieces, do you do all freehand routering?. Roly Quote
OutoftheWoodwork Posted July 12, 2013 Author Report Posted July 12, 2013 Yes I do. I transfer it all to the wood using carbon paper, then route them. Usually with my trim router, now. I use my full-size router with the round over bit to only do the edges, pretty much now. I used to use the Porter Cable P100 H 100th Anniversary Edition (weighed like 30 pounds lol) for everything. That's what I learned on. He, unfortunately was stolen, and can't find a replacement. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote

OutoftheWoodwork Posted July 12, 2013 Author Report Posted July 12, 2013 (edited) Awww thanks, Roly. That's one of the nicest compliments you could have given me. I'm humbled. And after reading your post, I have to correct myself... I also have a second full size router. He sits in a table that I never use lol The idiot who broke in my shop left that one alone. Why couldn't he have taken THAT one, and left my old Porter Cable one alone! Barb Edited July 12, 2013 by OutoftheWoodwork Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
multitom Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 Barb , honestly ,your work has really inspired me to ge my B&W 8mm out again and try some free handing again as the first attempt bombed and I mounted it back on the table, now learning how to do borders, rounding and stuff, since we have your expereince on board be prepared to get to many stupid questions:-) so thst I start making something creative and justify the gift . I am sure you won't mind Barb. Excellent control, now I have to google and see what is trim router,is this especially made to work on word art and any drawing with some special bit. Well done ,and we needed a router artist to be a part of our family and you have completed that. Thank you Barb Quote
OutoftheWoodwork Posted July 12, 2013 Author Report Posted July 12, 2013 (edited) Thank you so much Mahendra All these positive responses, I'm starting to blush lol As for the questions, I'm always available to answer them if I can. If you're going to look up a trim router, the one I use is the DeWalt 611 I believe. (It's in my trunk-since the break in, I don't keep my tools in the camper; at least not until I get it moved-so lets be even dumber and run around with a grand worth of tools in the trunk, right? lol) I use Publisher for my sign making, (with Word running in the background just in case I need it) and I did a google search for free fonts. I found fonts of every type imaginable, and looked at wood sign companies on line to get an idea on the fonts generally used. I will say, however, that I've used only a couple of theirs, and used what I thought worked best for the theme of the sign. I also found some fonts that are "picture" fonts (stars, flowers, plants, etc) and have used those as graphics. The one with John Wayne is actually a font (his picture). Attached is the latest sign I did for a customer. As for bits, I have a veining bit, 'V' groove, (two different sizes) and a few of the flat bits for cleaning out. I'll post a picture of my most used bits when I get over to the shop. Barb As for "stupid questions", the only stupid ones are the ones that no one asks. There's no such thing. keefie Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 You have some really great looking work there. The only time I tried to freehand with a router - I wanted it to go one way but the router had other ideas and went it's own way lol. Keefie Quote
Fab4 Posted July 12, 2013 Report Posted July 12, 2013 Hi Barb: nice work After I viewed this earlier today I went to the shop and pulled out my plunge router I have very little experience when it comes to this tool but looking forward to learning it My freehand experience with this tool is when I dropped it and it did what it wanted to Doesn't get any freer than that Thanks for posting your work Fab4 Quote
OutoftheWoodwork Posted July 13, 2013 Author Report Posted July 13, 2013 lol Keefie and Fab4 If I can do it, anyone can. I have to say, though, it's crucial that the bits be sharp to do what you want the router to do. Once my router veers off in the slightest from the path I'm following, the bit's removed and I have it sharpened if possible, or replaced. It never fails, I'm in a real fine detailed design when the bloody thing starts to act up. Barb Quote
Kepy Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 Your work is great. Now I know what I can use my trim router for. It has been sitting in my shop for several yrs and never been turned on. OutoftheWoodwork 1 Quote

OutoftheWoodwork Posted July 16, 2013 Author Report Posted July 16, 2013 (edited) Barb I love the wedding bells bottle holder do you happen to have a pattern for them? Rob That's a tough one, Rob. I took a graphic I had of wedding bells, modified it slightly I think, and took the placement of the hole for the bottle from the original... then applied it to the graphic. Lemme see if I have a "real" pattern that you might be able to use, or maybe create one for you. Barb Edited July 16, 2013 by OutoftheWoodwork Quote
