Hi everyone,

I am relatively new to scrolling and have been lurking on this site in amazement of the wonderful work you guys and gals do. I just bought myself a dewalt saw for xmas and have been practicing, practicing, practicing.

My question is this... I have a good friend who has a son-in-law in the Marine Corps and is stationed in Afghanistan right now. He sent me a picture of the battalion insignia and wanted me to make him a 14" sign/plaque.

I was wondering on your thoughts, comments, etc. on how to go about this. Also if any designers are interested in making a pattern for this please let me know.

Thanks,

Terry

First, at the top of this page is an option to follow this topic. Do that.

The Old Crow Don will create a nice pattern.

You need to choose a nice wood. I prefer a thick wood opposed to framing

for plaques. 1/2 to 3/4 thick.

Print the pattern to size you want.

Prepare the wood by sanding and edging and attach pattern.

After you cut the pattern give a final sanding.

Cut a piece of lauan (thin plywood) to size for the backing and paint the inside Marine Blue.

Glue the backer to the scroll work. Adding small brads in the back corners to secure.

One more final, final sanding and put a finish on. I prefer lacquer

Saw tooth hanger if you want.

Here is a plaque I did as an example

Wow! I am stunned. It looks great and soon as I saw it I wanted to leave work and start cutting. (Good thing I didn't though...)

Well, Thank you very much Don and thanks LarryEA for the hints. I will definitely post an image when I get it cut. I am so glad I found this forum. It sure helps with the learning curve and I think I will stick around for awhile.

Well here it is everybody. I made the frame, cut the glass, added the color and it's all done.

Thanks again Don for creating the pattern.

Off to deliver the project to my friend now!
