  1. I have used wood from pallets and crates for years and not had any issues with the chem. I started with a dewalt planer and got years of great service from it. When it finally gave up the ghost 2 years ago I bought a Porter cable 12" at lowes for less than $300 figuring that would be fine for my needs. I have used it daily for those 2 years with very little problems. If I was to estimate how much wood I've run thru it would easily be over 100,000 linear ft. Most of the pallet wood I get is from a vinyl supply comp. and the boards are 12' long. every 2 weeks I pick up around 3-4 hundred boards and run them thru the planer after pulling the nails. I'm tough on my tools as far as working them hard, I don't give them much of a break!!! On the PC planer the blades cost $30 to replace vs $60 on the dewalt. I have resharpen my blades at least a dozen times. Most of my wood is pine but I do run Hardwoods as well thru the PC planer. There is one really nice feature with the dewalt in that it has a built in dust system that can be hooked up to a cyclonic collector. Hope this helps and wasn't to long winded. sully
  2. thanks all the sawdust and alcohol we knew about just trying to find a faster way to do it sully
  3. Just wondering if Damprid could speed the drying of wood . Maybe build a wood box to store wood in with stickers between each board and then have damprid inside of box ? anyone ever try this ? Friend of mine wants to speed the drying time for turning bowls. Also what is the best way to prevent logs outside from splitting .Logs are 1-2' round and 2-3' long. Thanks all sully
  4. they sell the rolls at Walmart in office supplies and harbor freight for less than $ 10.It's my newest friend in the shop to bundle finished products for storage till my shows get started. the rolls are 6" by 1000'. lasts a long time. sully
  5. Edward, we did our last show this past weekend and i'm ready for a long winters nap ! 30 shows this year has kept me away from the saw more than i like. I'm going to take about a month off then get started building up my inventory again. Thank God for my shop heater or it would be April before i could. God bless ya'll sully
  6. I do it all the time and it helps lots. Also if you use a miter saw much use a scrap peice of hardwood as a backer to make a cleaner cut on the back.mine is screwed to the fence from the back sully
  7. I make a lot of sawdust also , I spread it on my flowerbeds like mulch to keep the weeds down. Works great !!!! sully
  8. looks like my Skil brand saw sully
  9. I bought my Porter cable planer at lowes for around $250 and i love it. probably have run 5000 bf thru it in a couple of years. might be my most used tool in my shop sully
  10. Google is a great place to start BUT some of the images are copyrighted and could be an issue if you post the pattern here. sully
  11. I've had the same saw for 5 years with different issues. For the price it's a good saw. because it sounds like the motor is frozen or the linkage is frozen i'd take it back and get another skil. If you tear it down you may not be able to return it. maybe just take the cover off the left side and see what it's not doing sully
  12. DWV stands for drain, waste, vent. It is used mainly for sewer and venting it's what i used. Sch 40 is pressure pipe and is thicker and more expensive. Ferguson is a good source or check other plumbing supply houses in your area. As mentioned static can be a problem so tape a copper wire to the outside of the pipe when you get the system built and ground it . also remember if you reduce from 6" to 4" or smaller the machine will not work to it's peak so have at least 2 - 4" open at the same time. Hope this helps sully
  13. On fretwork I use black felt 95% of the time or red felt for my valentine stuff. Glue the felt to the back with wood glue. sully
  14. If it was me first i'd break into my happy dance then rest and do another dance lol lol lol. sooner or later you'll figger out what to make or do with it. Till then just keep dancing . sully

  16. I do like Wayne sully
  17. Check out inks on amazon, last time i bought there for my Brother printer i got bulk pack for lots cheaper than any store. sully
  18. I use water based clear poly from Lowes on all my projects. It does raise the grain slightly but a quick sanding with 220 grit on my orbital between coats and i'm ready for the next coat. What i like most besides the smooth finish is the cost and cleanup WATER !!!! I spray, brush and roll it on, and have even dipped the smaller pieces . sully
  19. Jim if you have the 3 knife planer the blades are $60 a set last i checked. I resharpened mine close to a 1/2 dozen times before i replaced them. If the nic is not to bad make a jig to hold them at a 45 degree angle and use a fine drum sander on your drill press. If it's real bad change the blades. sully
  20. I'm with the others ,proud to serve and ready if needed again, Thanks to my brothers that served and those that gave all. sully
  21. As many have said the better and yes more expensive saws are the best way to go but a point very often missed that i must point out is the blades you use. I have 3 saws , a Skil 16", Hitatchi 16", and a DW-788, all cut well but my fav. is the 788 because of the 21" table but the blade does the cutting -we all know that. If you use junk blades you will not be happy and won't enjoy scrollin. I use FDUR's for everything !!!!!! No spirals, No skip and no reverse skip blades. All saws move the blades up and down but the features of the saws makes one better than the other. My first saw was the Skil from Lowes at just over $100 and i'm still using it after 8 years.Get one that takes straight blades . Just my opinion and i'm stickin to it. sully
  22. Most of the big box stores have rubber "fernco" style adapters in the plumbing section that can reduce from 4" to 2" , but if you reduce the size of the inlet to your collector it will not be as efficient as with the 4". i suggest reducing at the tools and leave a couple outlets open to make sure your airflow is sufficient for the collector to run properly. sully
  23. Jim those look awesome. Thanks for showing sully
  24. Try using www.eventlister.com to find shows in your area. it's my fav. for finding shows.you don't have to pay to see whats out there in your area then just google the shows for more info and sometimes get applications. sully
  25. wife and i did our first of the year in Townsend TN. last weekend and did around $700 which is about normal for us. It's all about your location and having more than one type of craft to sell. We have 6 different types so when one don't sell the others do. Don't give up just keep looking for better shows. it won't happen overnite, we have been at it for 10 years now. sully
