  1. Hey Travis didn't you change browsers recently , could that be part of the problem ?
  2. Travis you do what you need just keep us posted Thanks
  3. Your welcome , Happy scrollin 2 you. Ron
  4. very nice !!!!!
  5. Nice cut u did great
  6. Just a footnote I've had my Skill from Lowes for two months and had to replace the upper blade holder once and it will wear out the screws that tighten the blade, so be ready for that, also the bellows that blows the dust away don't last long , I replaced mine with a small aquarium pump hooked to a remote switch and it works great. And it cost less than shipping a new bellows !!!!
  7. My first try went straight into the kindlin pile , and the second, third ,forth and so on . I'm my worst critic by far. that is a great cut for the first time on something that delicate . Tell him to keep it up . you are right to be proud . Ron
  8. What a bummer ,Thanks Travis , sure would have been nice , I wonder if its possible to get permision from nascar to sell our stuff ? I'll have to look into that before i give up. Course I don't need to get sued either , WHAT A PICKLE LOL .
  9. Thanks Travis , I really got worried when i saw that this mornin , be nice if you had a program to send them that would melt their computer . I hate spam LOL
  10. hey whats up with the drug ads on ssv , someone send them a virus !!!!!
  11. Travis this would be a good one for you , On you classes for gimp you talked about copyrights , i have a few patterns made by other designers of Dale Earnhart ,If i cut them to sell will i get in trouble . I live 15 miles from Bristol Speedway and when theres a race in town 2 times a year we get 160,000 race fans in town . I'd like to cut other patterns af other drivers but not if it's illegal . Little help please . I'm not talking about the nascar logo just driver and car pictures .Thanks so much.
  12. Thats pretty much the same process as the press and seal but you dont have to roll out the shelf paper like the press and seal , might have to try it . Thanks
  13. Phil i actually tilted my saw 8 inches front to rear . I was getting "pins and needles " in my shoulders , it really helped . Ron
  14. Sorry it took so long to reply been cutting for christmas . Ok the first coat i use Olympic sanding sealer ,it is water based . I let it dry for a few hours or till the next day the sand lightly . Water based does tend to raise the grain slightly but a quick sanding with 220 grit on my orbital does the trick. Then for my second coat i use Minwax water based Polycrylic clear gloss . Usually one coat of the minwax is all it takes . It goes on with a little milky look but dries clear. To make sure i get perfect coverage i have a clip on light shining down on what im spraying and i use the reflection to make sure there are no "holidays". This coat i give at least 8 hors before i handle it, I hate fingerprints. The spray gun i use is a Cambell Hausfeld but any good spray gun will work. Mines the 1 quart can style. Ive found that useing 30 psi works best but lower psi works too. I make the spray pattern as tight as possible .for cleaning i spray three different times at 90 psi changing the water each time. thats what works for me and the fumes are zero ,as far as the black background i have sprayed the minwax right over latex paint with no problems. Ron
  15. Travis thanks for the tutorials on useing Gimp , im on lesson 5 and starting to get the hang off it . it'll be a while till i'm able to post some patterns of my own but im going to keep learnin from your classes . soon i'll post some of my cuts to a gallery so all can see . thanks again for the classes . Ron
  16. I use olympic sanding sealer for my first coat then use clear gloss after that .both are water cleanup and the fumes are not toxic . i buy both types at lowes by the gallon and spray it on .
  17. I've been using water based clear finish on most of my stuff for years now . I like it for three reasons 1st its less expensive than say Deft or other laquer finishes & 2nd I use a spray gun to do my finishing so cleanup is fast & i dont have to buy mineral spirits or figure out what to do with the used spirits , I just throw the water out on my gravel drive, Lastly the fumes from water based don't leave me in the clouds, when i spray i can be out in my shop for hours . Has anyone else used this and had any long term experience or drawbacks besides it raising the grain slightly ?
  18. Hey Xray thanks for the advice on reverse spirals as i was close to sending off for some , ive used standard spirals and they work good where they are designed for. I'm curious if any other long time scrollers have tried specificaly the rev. spirals & what they think of them for stack potrait cutting which is 75 % of what i do. I want to do larger pieces than my 16 " saw will allow and spirals are the only way besides a bigger saw . Thanks for all the great tips and advice to everyone.
  19. I use this on everything I cut but mostly fretwork . I was having a lot of trouble with tape leaving the adhesive on the wood or breaking the fine fretwork off, it usually only takes a minute or less to peel a 8 x 10 pattern off.well worth the cost , just be sure to roll it on with a small wallpaper roller before you place the pattern.
  20. I dont know Where my mind was ,probably covered in sawdust ,I meant to say that i use "Glad Press & Seal" not " Cling Wrap ". Couldn't figure out why everyone was having so much trouble with this tip on pattern removal now I know , give it another try , Ya'll have a Good Thanksgiving & Lord Bless You
  21. I'm from kingsport in Northest Tn. When i decided to try scrollin ,i would spend as little as possible so i got a skill from lowes for $ 120 . I know there are much better tools out there but this gets my feet wet, of course you get what you pay for as ive already had to repair it twice. When i get ready to upgrade its nice to know i can ask for advice from the village. My last repair the bellows for blowing the dust ripped in half so rather than pay skill and wait on it i hooked up a small aquarium pump and it works better than the bellows.
  22. I cant take credit for this tip but will pas it on .I've tried many ways to put my patterns on my wood and they all work good but getting them off is a pain.I saw an article in Intarsia Times about using Glad Cling wrap and it is great. Just sand your wood first with 120 or 220 grit ,I blow off the dust then lay a piece of GCW over the wood and roll it out with a small wallpaper roller to get out the air bubbles. Make sure you place the sticky side down. Now your ready to glue your pattern on. This trick has save me hours picking off paper & glue. It peals right of but stays in place while you cut. Happy cuttin to you.
  23. Hey ya'll , im from tenn. just started scrollin a month ago & i love it. Been a woodworker for years but scrollin is a lot more fun than the other stuff ive done over the years .I'm learnin fast and look forward to manys years to come. I love doing religious portraits and scenes as i am a christian and i feel the lord wants me to use this skill for his glory. So far ive been doing things ive been able to download off the internet for free so if you know any sites with some good patterns let me know. Thanks and let the dust fly.
