k9dave Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Hi All, Hoping for your help on this one. I have recently finished my first portarait the subject being my granddaughter. Although I am quite pleased with the outcome I feel I need to tidy it up a bit with some kind of border. I really want to stay away from frames at the moment until I get more experince in making them (my joining is terrible!) I was thinking more of a pattern in each corner? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I have attached a photo of the portrait to give some ideas of what I'm talking about. Thanks, Mel Doug and bobscroll 2 Quote
rjR Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Welcome to the "pack!" Many answers and ideas can be found here. They also seem to teach me humility! Many JUST FANTASTIC projects are shown. New people bring new ideas too! I want to have even learned a few new things the day I die! Remember that we all can and need to still learn! The guy who thinks they know it all--ACTAULLY knows the least! One trick I sometimes use is; a burned effect along the edges. Sand them to a round over--- or even a random ragged look-- get the edges to where you like them. Now depending on your taste etc. just use a propane torch and lightly random burn along the edges. Careful where/How you sue the torch! PLEASE! Or if you have an electric woodburner pen type thing you can roll along the edges to get a neat random pattern. Another idea is to mask off the picture it self and do a "boom effect" with spray apint on the edges. Hope this helps and we are looking forward to seeing the finished result@ Quote
Travis Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Here's a super simple corner block. Just size it to what you want and place them in the corners. You can also Google Free Corner Clipart and modify one of those designs. Nick@tinkers-cove 1 Quote
Phantom Scroller Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 If you have a router run some scallops around the edge and paint the scallops like a postage stamp effect. Roly Quote
bobscroll Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 Hello Mel. You could use these as corner decoration if you want, See what you think o.k. Bob Quote
spirithorse Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 If you would prefer to use a frame but, just don't like your joints, you can over-lap the pieces of wood for the frame and scroll a random curve through both pieces at the same time. That way they will join perfectly. God Bless! Spirithorse amazingkevin 1 Quote
amazingkevin Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 these are great ideas for you i don't know about, lucky you! Quote
k9dave Posted January 16, 2014 Author Report Posted January 16, 2014 Thanks Guys, Lot of food for thought. As for routing the edges I do have a router but I'm afraid my router skills are not that brilliant. Great idea for frame joints Spirithorse I would never had thought of that and one I will definately try out. I think I will go for a pattern on this occasion thanks for the examples. Mel Quote

Proxprof Posted January 18, 2014 Report Posted January 18, 2014 I once made a portrait of my kids and glued a piece of rope all around the edges. I don't have a picture of it to show, but can you imagine what I mean? Quote
