What do people use first, i want to paint white onto wood. I use gloss acrylic paints but the white looks patchy, How can I get a good finish?

Roly tells it right.

Spackle and fill in any holes then sand your wood, wipe down, apply a primer and let it dry thoroughly.

Then, you are ready to paint!

Tip: The kind of primer you use should match the kind of paint you use: latex primers go with latex paints, and oil-based primers go with oil-based paints.

I've had really great results with Krylon paint over Krylon Primer/sealer. 2 coats of primer, light sand with 320, wipe off e verything with tack rag, then light coats of color until I get the results I want.
