  11. My understanding is that it really doesn't require maintenance. I'd just keep the bed clean and make sure not to leave tension on the blade when you're done for the evening. Outside of that, I think you're set.
  12. Uggggg....I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with the Excalibur. My understanding is that its a really solid machine. Sounds like your saw is channeling all the bad luck. Hopefully this will be the last of your troubles. From here on out, it'll be smooth sailing!
  13. Here's a supplier that ships worldwide: http://www.ereplacementparts.com/nozzleair-p-67085.html
  14. I'd see if you can find a replacement part. I can't imagine it would cost too much to ship it from the states. Until then, I'm wondering if you can use some vinyl tubing and put it into the spot where it should go. A wire coat hanger taped to the side of the tubing should provide some support while you wait for the new part. John's idea of an aquarium air blower is another good idea. I've heard others use that method and seems to work well for them.
  15. The Excaliber is the Cadillac of scroll saws. I'm guessing it was just a fluke. I haven't heard anybody having much trouble with them. I wouldn't worry too much about it. If so, I'd contact the manufacturer directly.
  16. Ooooo...what a good guy! That's awesome! Have fun with your new toy. I'd just use some paste wax (no silicone) the same way you would a DeWalt (clean with WD40 or similar oil). That treatment is pretty common with any tool surface to keep it from rusting and help the work to slide better.
  17. You can try this website: http://www.picresize.com/ It'll resize the picture for you. I don't remember the limits of SSV, but I think it needs to be under 2mb.
  18. I'm not in CO, but here in MT, wildlife, scenic designs, western and native american designs would do well. Montanans (and I'd imagine folks from CO are the same) take pride in our wildlife, scenic vistas, and western culture. Naturally, word art will always do well, from clever bumper-sticker style sayings, religious and inspirational quotes. Check out the CO tourism website to get a better handle on what they show pride in. Other products could be magnets, bookmarks, portrait-style cuttings, mini-clocks. Check Etsy and search scroll saw and see what others are selling. That could spark a couple ideas too.
  19. Hi Greg. Welcome to the Village. We're glad you found us. Lots of friendly folks here to talk shop with. I think you'll have a great time here. Anyway, welcome aboard. Jump in and have some fun!
  20. You can cut metal on a scroll saw too. Other materials are acrylic, plywood, hardwood. Go to the countertop/kitchen section of your home improvement store and grab their formica samples. You can also use Corian (another countertop material. Look on eBay). You can decoupage pictures, tissue paper, or scrap book paper to some plywood for some nice effects, too. Craft stores has this plastic stuff that people use to make jewelry. Basically, you cut it out, layer it and put it in the oven to fuse them (it's not fused glass, this is plastic). Anyway, they have lots of colors to choose from. A few ideas.
  21. Just note there is a difference between birch plywood and Baltic Birch Plywood. Baltic birch is the most commonly used (as well as finnish birch) for scroll saw portraits. The big difference is that baltic birch ply is void free. You can find BB ply at stores that sell cabinet grade plywood or online. Regular birch plywood is most often sold at home improvement stores and can sometimes provide disappointing results. I think most like baltic birch plywood because of the light color and non-distinct grain pattern. It really shows off the portrait well. But any kind of cabinet grade plywood works well. I've cut some with oak that really looks nice. Some like maple. People like poplar ply and mahogany for puzzles.

  23. I run into that a fair amount. I've invited several to SSV and none have showed, despite the fact I mention we have 1000+ free patterns on the site. Whenever I want to learn about something, the first place I turn to is the internet and forums. Its such a wealth of information. Plus you get to meet people who share the same interests as you, which I think is pretty cool.
  24. Hi Johnny. I'm glad you posted. You're right, the Pattern Library is full of wonderful patterns made by some amazing pattern designers. We're very fortunate to have such a talented group. Anyway, welcome aboard. Jump in and have some fun!
  25. Hi Martin. Welcome to the Village. We're glad you found us. Be sure to check out the GIMP lessons in the Village University forum if you're interested in learning to create your own scroll saw portrait patterns. You can find them here: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=1303 Anyway, welcome aboard. Jump in and have some fun!
