The whole thing is made out of appleply and since I have been making them, a couple of years now only one person has used it for gumballs to the best of my knowledge. Most have been using it for Skittles and M&Ms. The key is the amount of edge feathering you have inside and on the wheel opening. Real easy to make and a kid drawer at the craft fairs and shows. Filled with Skittles the bright colors draw them in like a magnet and they light up when they are allow to give the wheel a spin and they get their candy. I try to have at least one or two at each show. DW

This started life as a Steve Good pattern. I added a tray ( ver 2 ) I then made the tray removable ( ver 3 ) DW

Kevin sorry to hear about your waffling customers. For me and this is just me mind you I get down on paper exactly what the customer wants and a deposit or a full payment for the item. I know that not everyone will be happy however I can and have pointed to the contract which spelled out what we agreed upon. Just having it in writing with them agreeing to what you were supposed to do and for how much is enough most of the time. If they want to change the scope of the work being done you can inform them that the items cost is increasing with each change as it takes time, effort and material to do the new changes that were not figured in the old price. It does not have to be an outlandish increase just one that reflects that you have put extra into the project. Thankfully not everyone is like that. Still it helps immensely to get the scope of the work agreed upon and in writing, especially a large or expensive order. Those look great btw. Thanks for sharing them with us. DW

The bowl blank really is not difficult. The pine and the appleply are all 3/4 inch thick x 11 inches long x 3 inches wide. I glued the pine to both sides of the long sides of the appleply so that I had a pine,appleply,pine board 3/4 inches thick x 9 inches wide x 11 inches long. From there I carefully centered the pattern. The rings were 3/8 so with the wood 3/4 thick the angle to cut the rings is 26.5 degrees left side down. Wish I had a video camera so that I could make a video tutorial on the process,alas I can not afford one at the moment. DW

The perfect bowl for passing the chips / popcorn / trail mix. The bowl is 9 in. in diameter and has convenient handles. Cut from 3/4 Pine and 3/4 Appleply. Sealed with Tung Oil and shellac and top coated with lacquer. DW

Larry making bowls is not real difficult. Cutting the rings takes a little practice as you are cutting on an angle however it is one of those things that comes fairly quickly. I use http://www.scrollmania.com/polydraw.html a lot of times to work up the shape of the bowl. As for the wood choices... well... that is really just me exploring a what would happen if....... I started off making bowls from Carole Rothman's book and branched off from there. Getting the angle to drill is not too difficult now that we have a scientific calculator built into our computers. You just have to know the ring thickness and the thickness of the wood you are going to use. Also there is this calculator - http://www.scrollmania.com/AngleCalc.html that will do the necessary calculations to get the drill angle. DW

Very nice piece. That is a remembrance for sure. If you have not done it you might want to put down on paper all information you remember about it and tape it to the back, that way when your kids or grandkids come across it you will have the information handy. DW
