  1. the rounds are end grain, so stain is sucked up like a sponge. put a conditioner (or a coat of poly) before you stain. see if that helps.
  2. A prayer sent up!

    Minion

awesome!!!!! I love the minions!! I wish I had a few running around the shop.
  6. I put vinyl stick down floor tiles on my floor. It is so much easier to keep clean then concrete, plus it really brightened up the space. I used the cheapest tiles they had at menards at $0.12 a piece it was a fairly cheap improvement to my shop. Something that I always think would be nice in a shop would be a wall of cabinets/storage. I see it a lot in other peoples shops (my shop is too small for that to work)
  7. My husband just put 1/2 in the garage (I can't remember if it was an OSB or a ply) He went with 1/2 because it matched with the 1/2 sheetrock that was used in other places. He wanted to replace some parts with wood but left other parts sheetrock. I think painting it is worth the work, the light reflection really improves the shop.
  8. Awesome! It is so fun to re-organize the shop!
  9. I use rattle can type spray finishes. I don't have room to dedicate to finishing so I use the garage or outside. I like a spray lacquer or rustoleum 2x coverage clear spray. My personal preference is glossy.
  10. No clue, but it us interesting.
  11. It might be salvageable. As hard as it is try finishing the piece.
  12. Congrats!!! as for the what to make question. I recommend taking a look at the book "making toys that teach" http://www.amazon.com/Making-Toys-That-Teach-Neufeld/dp/1561586064/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374968043&sr=8-1&keywords=toys+that+teach Most of the ideas in the book don't really need the patterns, so you might not need to buy it, just look at it. Do a search for Montessori. lots of learning while playing types of things and lots of wood involved. (it is natural) lastly, take a camera with you when you wander the aisles of baby stuff. So many times I see things and say, I could make that.
  13. My husbands buddy Joe was over last night. Greg and Joe were out in the garage "working" on a car. I say "working" because I am not entirely sure that there was anything wrong with the car before they started, but at least it still runs after they got done. I decided to make Joe a sign for his garage. I started playing with graphics about 6:00 and had the sign cut and finished by about 9, so not too bad for a Friday night.
  14. Fairies love flowers, does she have specific flowers in her garden or a favorite flower.
  15. I have about 5 years in.
  16. There was a MythBusters episode where they caused a sawdust cloud explosion. So tons of sawdust and the open flame of the gas heater could be an issue. My shop is in the basement, fairly close to our gas furnace. I asked my husband if he was concerned about the fire/explosion possibility. He said that he said that it was far more likely that the air filter would get clogged with sawdust and starve the furnace for air and cause carbon monoxide poisoning. I have seen our air filter, it could happen. We have extra carbon monoxide detectors in the house/basement and check our filter weekly
  17. Hmmm... Can I make one that says men by invitation only?
  18. very interesting! Thanks!
  19. wow, I can see why you were glad to get those set up with a backer. I would be very nervous. The baby's hands are really awesome!
  20. Both boys had safety glasses on and the dust collection vacuum was running and hooked up to the ex-21.
  21. The other day my son and his friend were running around the house looking for things to do. I was trying to straighten up my shop a bit and they followed me into my work shop. They were both instantly attracted to my bright orange Hegnar. When I said "do you boys want to cut something" they both instantly said yes. They cut mostly straight-ish lines but after a few minuets they were getting pretty good. My favorite comment speaks to both the awesomeness of my ex-21 and the mindset of today's youth. "can't you turn the sound off of this one like you did on that one?"
  22. I just tried it and it worked for me. so I don't know. Do you have any other browsers you try accessing it through?
  23. My son recently upgraded to a new bunk bed and we had to redecorate his room. He choose the theme of Lego Ninjago. If you have a boy under 10, I am sure you know all about it; for those of you who don't it combines all the things little boys love legos, ninjas, fighting, golden weapons, spining, bad guys, good guys, flying ships, dragons, it is "pretty much the greatest thing ever". We got the bedding, and the posters. He and I have even made an entire armory full of the golden weapons of spinjitzu (Thank god for gold duck tape and paper towel rolls ) I really wanted to make something for him and I decided that the logos for the elemental powers would make nice wall plaques. I looked all over for a decent image that I could use but found nothing. So I ended up scanning in the bed sheet and using that as the pattern. (on a side note, as I was scanning the sheet my husband came into the office and acted like nothing weird was going on) I cut the pieces out of 1/8" baltic birch plywood and painted them. The backers are glittery gold, which looked awesome against my white shop walls but slightly less cool against the tanish walls of the bedroom. The icons are painted with their corresponding elemental colors. FYI - the 4 elements and their ninja are Blue - Lightning - Jay Black - Earth - Cole White - Ice - Zane Red - Fire - Kai The most important thing was that my son loved them! and the neighbor kid totally wants a set.
  24. That is beautiful!
