  1. These are cuttings from yesterday. The first two are just off the saw and need some sanding. The other is finished and ready to give to my Vet as a thank you for all he does. All the patterns are from the Holz Brothers. I can't believe how fast they are.
  2. If you apply a little BLO to the large sheet, then label which side it is, you could then tell whenever you wanted to cut something.
  3. How about if you do the sign in the same wood and then the backer the same as the picture. There wouldn't be quite as much contrast that way. Or at least the sign in the same wood as the picture.
  4. I started collecting patterns seriously over 20 yrs ago so you can imagine that my collection is rather large. I have a bookcase for printed patterns put in 3-ring binders with each binder labeled as to subject. I have a lot on the computer that is sorted by subject and a lot that I haven't gotten to yet (those are backed up on the cloud). I also have a bunch on an old computer that I keep intending to retrieve. I tend to be a collector. At one time when I was a lot more active, I had 5 scroll saws. I was down to two until I got my new Pegas and can't seem to find the time to use them. Someone will have fun one of these days when they have to sort through all these things.
  5. I'm glad you said that about the Pegas blades. I am new to them and have a couple of items to do that will be in 1/8" and I can only do one at a time. May have to try my FD blades as sure don't want to mess these up as they are large.
  6. I think you will like it. I got one from the first shipping and am really pleased. I don't do nearly as much work as I used to but just had to try it. I also got some of the Pegas blades and it makes for a great combination.
  7. This is an interesting discussion. I think every one of us has to decide what works best for him. I personally like the blue painter's tape and I often put the clear tape on top, especially if there are small cuts as often the pattern will lift on those. I did some the other day as was out of the blue tape so just glued to the wood and wiped down with mineral spirits and the whole pattern lifted off complete with no problem.
  8. Glad to see you are recovering. I was wheelchair bound for 5 weeks and am having enough trouble building back from that.
  9. I am really liking my Pegas although I haven't had much time on it. I had a small vac that isn't as loud as a chop vac but had a smaller hose so I cut a round wood piece that would fit in the exhaust hole and then a hole in it that the vac hose would fit through. Seems to work fine as I am cutting in the kitchen and haven't had any complaints.

    I am Back

Just a short update from a long inactive member. I was serving as a full-caregiver for my 98 yr old Mother until she passed in Oct. I then decided to downsize so bought a small house with nice shop building but moving into something less than half the size creates all kinds of problems. Finally got the move made with the help of some great friends in January. Of course nothing seems to go smoothly. I went out early one morning to get the trash out for pickup and didn't notice that we had received some ice overnight. I fell off the back porch which is about 3 steps up and had 2 fractures and a dislocated foot. It is disconcerting to look down and see your foot dangling off the end of your leg held on only by the skin. I did manage to crawl back into the house and call for help. Within 4 hrs, I was in surgery having a plate and screws putting me back together. This was followed by 5 weeks of being house bound as I was not allowed to put any weight on that leg. Talk about boring. I was going crazy, especially as my new Pegas scrollsaw came and all I could do was set and look at it. Finally convinced my caregivers to let me set it up in the kitchen attached to a shop vac so I could actually try it out and LOVE it. Last week I was pulling weeds in a flower bed and it turns out that they were poison oak so I broke out in a very itchy rash all over. After a shot, it is clearing up and hopefully my tribulations have ended for a while unless you count being under a tornado warning every night. So far we have only gotten rain. A lady is selling rain gauges made from a 5 gal. bucket. Enough of me as I am back to cutting and working on some things for a wedding. It is good to be back.
  11. That is very well done. I really like the oak.
  12. Very nice work. I have a pattern for the Serenity Prayer but haven't cut it yet.
  13. You may be surprised as it is quality work. I donated some pieces to the church for a fundraiser and was really surprised at how well they sold.
  14. Back in the 60's (19 not 18), I went to an auction with my Grandfather. He purchased a box of what I thought was junk that I gave him a hard time about. After he got it home and put back together he had an old Delta scrolling jigsaw (the old cast iron floor model). I had to eat my words but learned a little about running it. In the 70's, I went to a yard sale and found an identical saw all together and working. There wasn't much info available back then so I just experimented. Started designing Christmas ornaments that I painted and included the date. Gave those out instead of cards and found out that a lot of people collected dated ornaments. In the 90's I became unemployed due to a hostile takeover of the company so I sold out and moved to the hills of Arkansas. Bought a company that did wholesale craft supplies from a couple wanting to retire. Most of the business was mail order but I opened a small store and sold to tourists. Also built quite a business cutting wood blanks for tole painters. My old Delta wasn't keeping up so I bought a new Delta Q3 in 94. Also accumulated 3 Delta 350s and eventually a Hawk 20vs. I got out of the business and moved to Missouri in 2009 for retirement. Found a DeWalt which I am still using along with my Q3. Don't do very much selling now but enjoy making things to give away.
  15. Nice work. I'm still waiting for the weather to warm enough to get out to the shop.

    Ribbon

A nice idea and one that will be appreciated. One suggestion is to add some color that represents the type of cancer. I have done it by backing it with fabric.
  17. Thank you to all Vets whenever they served. It hits me emotionally now whenever we are thanked (Navy 59-63). It was so different back then.
  18. Nice job and painting on something like that is fine. Years ago when I was doing a lot of names, I created a template of the letters I liked and just drew a line on the wood and traced around the letters. I used to work part time at HD and before Christmas we set up a couple of weekends and did cuttings for all the kids that came through the store.
  19. I like the idea of colored backer. I have done that a lot and it really makes the cutting pop.
  20. Beautiful work. Mine didn't look like that. About 1962, while I was in the service, we were 20 miles from town so a group of us had scooters. We would head for town stopping at every tavern along the way. It makes you wonder how we ever survived. Sold if for $75 when I got out.
  21. A really fine job of a beautiful piece.
  22. I got mine early so it has been on the wall for a while. I got the backing at Hobby Lobby. It came in 12x12" sheets. Tried to find colors that would be representative of the branch of service. Thx for all the kind words.
  23. I was asked to create something for all the vets in our church for Veteran's Day. I finally got them completed.
  24. If you're working in real wood, a little carving will really make it pop.
  25. Welcome back. These aren't the golden years but rather the rusty years.
