  1. When spraying lacquer over lacquer, the thinner in the sprayed layer will always dissolve a bit of the previous layer. That is why you have very tight bonding between layers. The side effect is what you noticed. Not sure what conditions cause it or what to change to avoid it. Maybe taking precautions to have more thinner evaporate before landing on the object - higher air pressure, further distance away, higher air temperatures all could help. Bill

  3. since scroller is spelled "hoarder", isn't that like asking do you breathe when you scroll? Yes, my name is Bill and I am a hoarder.

  6. It really doesn't make much difference what type of light you use as long as you use all the same type. All incandescent, or fluorescent or LEDs. As long as you have your camera set on auto white balance it will correct to a daylight color. Depending on how dramatic you want the lighting, you can change the wattage - go up for more dramatic and down for softer. Its best to have the item cross light from two sides to avoid shadows. However using a lightbox will usually avoid shadows and generally produces a soft well lit subject with only one or two lights. Bill
  7. That's sweet! Bill
  8. Its in the basement with no heat or air, just a fan and portable heater when needed which is not to open. Bill
  9. Mine's in the basement shop, even that's hard enough to keep the dust out of the rest of the house. I'm always tracking it upstairs and get yelled at! Oh well! Bill
  10. Another welcome to the Village! Bill
  11. Mike, if the design has no interior cuts then a band saw would be my choice. It can cut thicker material, is faster and by using different width blades you have a lot of versatility. Bill
  12. John, your picture is sharp and clear with a nice focus. IMHO what you really want is to draw attention to is your work and the grain of the wood. To do that you need a contrasting color that complements the rich grain and the brown tones. The first picture has a light tone so that doesn't allow the picture pop, the second has lots of contrast, however the blue is a bit too bright so it competes for attention. So you could either mute that color or change to a soft dark brown background. Bill
  13. Merry Christmas and welcome to the Village! You're on the right track of practicing and developing your skills. There's lots of helps here so all you need is to ask. Bill

  17. Hi Rob, welcome to the village! You're not a Louisville fan are you? So you're looking for a saw? My advice is to check on craigslist and ebay to see what is used (and still a good saw). Then try it. Watch for too much vibration (use the nickel test), bad sounding noises, too much side play, too much wear. You should be able to find something to you liking in the $100-200 range. Look around at this and other scrolling sites for their comments on the saws. There's lots of information out on the web about them. Bill
  18. Hi and welcome to the village. Like you I enjoy the religious side of scrolling and am also new to the sport. I'm also in Tennessee, in Cookeville, where are you at? There are a few from Tennessee on the site. Bill
  19. 3. Is 1/8 hardboard a suitable practice material, IMO No! I find the hardboard dust to be irritating, I find it best to stick with thin woods or a plywood. I also use an old vacuum to keep the dust contained. Bill

  21. I store mine on the computer and organize them into general categories so they're a little easier to find. Each file name is a short descriptive name. That also sorts by alphabet. I print them when I need them. Bill
