  1. Several weeks ago I was doing a craft show at a RV Park/resort and I saw a vendor with Diamond Willow walking sticks. I had never seen this wood before so was impressed with it's beauty. He told me that it is available in the northwest, Canada and Alaska. It is found in the worst areas for mosquito's. He also had several pieces about 2' +/- finished with poly for only $1 or $2 each. My Dollar store mind took over and started to think, "What Can I do with them?" This is my result. I have been offered from $12 to $20 each. Not bad for my fund raising efforts. John Old Dust.
  2. The stand up cross was cut from a stack of 3 3/8" cutting boards from the dollar store. The crosses - one with a rectangular block backing and the other has a backing of vainer. The boxes are another find from the dollar store. I added inlay butterflies and did some pencil torch scarring to add caricature. The boxes are lined with craft sponge sheets. John Old Dust
  3. For celebrity portraits where pattens are readily available, and I stack cut 4 at a time, I get a $20 donation. I use dollar tree store frames. For special order portraits from a photo, with 1 or 2 heads, I get $75 for the first and $55 each for any additional ordered at the same time (for stack cutting). John Old Dust
  4. The tilted table would do the same thing. John Old Dust
  5. I have my DeWalt mounted on an old Delta stand, It is also high, but I use a bar stool ( with drink at hand) and it doesn't bother me a bit. (Hic!) John Old Dist
  6. If you are a member of VFW or AM Legion, they appreciate cuttings of "Remember Vet's" related. Steve Good has several. http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/ The latest is a "Never Forgotten" that my posts loved to get. You might even get a free drink. Just a thought. John Old Dust
  7. I cut my portrait boards to either 8"X10" or 8 1/2" X 11" and get wood frames from the Dollar Tree store. They have 'certificate' frames the the 8 1/2" X 11" fit, all for only $1 each. All with glass. John Old Dust
  8. Well I wore out 3 Delta's so had to order a DeWalt. I know many of you use this saw, and I have a few questions. 1. I notice that in the manual there is no reference to lubricate anything. I had to constantly oil or grease my Delta's. Comments? 2. I suspect most do not use the "hold down" gizmo? 3. Bottom feed or top feed blade? If top feed, what do you do with the 'guard' in front of the bottom clamp? 4. How do you deal with the top arm to hold up? Any other suggestions to deal with this beautiful saw appreciated. Thanks; John Old Dust
  9. Here is my cutting of roy & maggie. I incorporated several patterns. Thanks All. John Old Dust
  10. I hate to admit it but, if the sawdust and cutting chips get any higher I might not get to my saw. No, I will not post a pix. Someone once asked me for my "scrap wood". I told him that scrollers don't have "scrap wood". We have a constant diminishing dimensional inventory. John Old Dust
  11. I think I mentioned this before, that a Christian Book Store likes my work, so I have made some more. John Old Dust
  12. Has anyone put their work on ETSY.com? If so, how did it go? John Old Dust
  13. I just went to the pet store and bought an aquarium air pump. (20 gal size) It works great. John Old Dust
  14. OK! I still don't have it right. I was trying to be polite with "dusty brain" but in our house it is a BRAIN FART. This is the correct address-- (i Hope) sketchup.google.com If not, than just search. It is there someplace. Sorry John Old Dust
  15. OOPS! Yes, Google sketchup.com Sorry, John Old Dust (With dusty brain!.)
  16. I just found a FREE CAD program that is simple and fun to use. You can draw up some 3 D patterns. www.googlesetup.com. Watch the video tutorials to find out how to use. Have fun. John Old Dust
  17. OK I think I have solved it. I now put the pattern pix in "view", then copy and paste into Publisher to resize. Thanks John Old Dust
  18. There are several patterns I would like to do in the library, However, when I download them they are filled with text and the actual pattern is so small that some details are lost when I try to enlarge them. Suggestions please! John Old Dust.
  19. If there is a nearby Kitchen Cabinet Remodeling shop near you it would be to your best interest to get to know them. Get to talk to the owner and tell hem what you do. Show him a few pieces and find out his interest. Perhaps you could cut something that would interest him. Give it to him. The reason I post this is that when they remodel, all of the old cabinets are just thrown out. This is a gold mine for you. The doors are already finished and the panels are just great for flat portrait, etc. cuttings. The stiles and rails make great desk top name plates and bases for stand up items. The sides and back can also be used for various cuttings. Good Luck. John Old Dust
  20. This was in our local paper a few weeks ago. John Old Dust
  21. There are some such patterns from www.wildwooddesigns.com John Old Dust
  22. As I mentioned before, I do most of my scrolling as a fund raiser for a handicapped camp. I was contacted about a year ago by someone who had a partially finished Cathedral from a scroller who passed away before finishing it. It was about 60% completed. I finished the work and it was raffled off by the camp. It is called "The Chimes of Normandy" and I added a chimes mechanism in the tower. John Old Dust
  23. Thanks for the reply's. The Amazing Grace was cut from Poplar. I had stack cut Poplar and Oak 1/2" I have been scrolling about 8 years now. John Old Dust
  24. Have two new cuttings I just finished in my gallery. John Old Dust
  25. Just found you. I do my scroll work as a fund raiser for the Arizona Lions Clubs Handicapped Camp. During the "Winter Visitor" season here in AZ I do a number of craft shows at RV and Mobile Home parks/resorts. Two weeks ago I was able to send the camp a check for $3,000.00 that I was able to raise over the last year. That brought my total over the years, to over $34,000.00. I look forward to sharing ideas and hints I have learned. Here is hint #1. Check out 99 cent stores and Dollar Tree stores for items you can add scroll saw art to; I.E. wood boxes, cutting boards, picture frames, clocks (yes I have bought quarts clocks for 99 cents, added scroll work and got $15-$20 donation.) The 99 cent stores are usually family owned by Orientals and can get special orders for you, because of their contacts. See you down the road. John Old Dust
