    I have tried multiple things with mixed results. I will try some better quality brushes. The area I want to paint is very tiny. Just getting poor results with the wood choice. Oak does not seem to work well. Baltic Birch was the best with water colors but as others mentioned it raised the grain.

    I always make several of the military puzzles to give away at my shows. I used the puzzle pattern for the bear and made a USCG puzzle with it. At my shows I look for hats or shirts with military logos. My last show I found a USCG hat. Turned out to be parents of a Coast Guard member. They got the puzzle. I also made some of the military plaques for an American Legion Post. They wanted a Space Force one also. I was able to make one using the Space Force logo. I now see a patten available. Hope the clock is well received.

    I have a need to paint some areas that are small and border with other colors. I am having a hard time painting without leaving brush strokes. Currently trying to paint on Oak. I just finished a piece on Baltic Birch with some success using water colors. Looking for some advice on what to use to help with the brush strokes? I have tried mixing with water both mixing and then just dipping the brush in water then then paint

    One of my shows is at a church, outside event except for the bake sale which is inside. I have been doing that event for 3 years with each year getting better. If you apply early you can request your site which i do and have an excellent location. It's a two day event Friday and Sat. Sat is usually better but not by much. Both good days.

    Had my second show. Was a little disappointed with results for several reasons. The attendance was not what I expected. They had a preshow which was Thursday night for two hours. Very low turnout for this night. Sat was the best day. Large crowd. Friday and Sunday were low. Did make a little profit which is always good but the cost of the event was high. I usually avoid these types of events but took a chance. Took place in a large center that had what they called the ballroom area and then the arena. I along with another booth were kind of between the two and off to the side. We felt out of the way some. They did put up some signs pointing our way after we talked with them but I think the attendance was down. Did sell puzzles and birdhouse along with nativity items.

    I looked around at my current show and have seen mixed with prices marked on item. I had some signs and other items were not marked. I have since marked everything or have a sign.

    I have had individuals as for a better price and simply tell them that is the price. I do not lower my price during the event at all. If someone pays the price on the first day then I don't think it should be less on the last hour. I do sell the birdhouses for $10 each and 3 for $25 put it is posted.

    Watching folks at my shows I have mixed views on pricing items. Looking at other vendors I see some price everything and other don’t. I have some prices displayed on other items are not. I’ve watch some folks look for prices and if I can’t get to them some leave and some ask. I know not pricing opens up the dialogue but have mixed views. thoughts from other?

    Last year I sold maybe 3 birdhouses. Nativity items have been very good the last two years. Did not offer them the first year at this particular show. Another show next week.

    Had a very good show a couple of weeks ago. 3rd year there which each year getting better. Been on corner site for 2 years. Show was a 2 day event, Friday and Saturday. Show is only for crafters and handmade items including cedar outdoor furniture. Did not get a chance to look too much at other vendors. Did talk with someone doing CNC work and there was a laser booth close to me. I think there was above 120 vendors. Well attended. People are still amazed that everything is done by hand with a scroll saw. One thing I do is show the blades I use. Have a couple of pictures of the scroll saw with an item that has been cut. Clocks don't seem to sell. I was able to sell one hummingbird clock but not much interest. Sold lots of nativity items and about 50+ birdhouses of various styles. I offer to change the bird if folks like a different color of wood type. I then with glue it in place for them.

    You are correct that you need to show a profit. I guess it comes down to what is a profit. I guess what I'm looking at is the expenses that I have would now be deductible against what I sell.

    Meet with a tax professional this morning right before were due for a blast from Debby in the form of lots of rain. Now I have been doing this for a couple of years and was not wrong in the way I was reporting but did not take advantage of the tax breaks. I was doing this as a hobby and reporting as such. Was not taking advantage of expenses. I could not take off cost of material, shows, etc. I was doing ok and enjoyed it. Still do.

    JT. You've hit on a couple of items that I have been consistently reading. Hobby vs business. What I have read is a hobby you only make enough to cover the expense of making the item. You do it for the enjoyment. No expenses are allowed so what I understand is that the show cost, gas to get there, etc are not covered. I have an appointment next week with and accountant. Seems like the rules between business and hobby changed a few years ago with took away expenses from the hobby side.

    Everyone has some great thoughts and JT you hit on a few of the main items. I will just be doing craft shows. Have done a couple a year now and actually like it. Yes can be a pain but have enjoyed the experience. My main items include the puzzles that everyone is familiar with. I also cut other items that have sold well. I have no intention of selling online or going out of state. This may change in the future but no plans right now. I guess one of my main questions is hobby vs business. Is it worth going the business route. I will be scheduling a meeting to discuss these issues. I will research the small business administration. Thanks everyone.

    I have been doing our taxes for ever. Nothing real complex about our situation until now. Just have been searching to try and understand what is involved and how it works but there are pieces I'm trying to understand. Yes it's time to go talk with a tax person but just trying to be better prepared. Thanks.

    I have been doing a few craft shows a year but have been thinking of gong the business route. Maybe I have been doing it wrong for a few years now but looking ahead. I have been registered with state for tax collection purposes. I know I should talk to an accountant at some time but I'm a small operation and trying to understand what I need to question. If I can do it myself great but may have to bite the bullet. Does anyone know of on an online course or videos dealing with selling crafts accounting (beyond just keeping track of what you spend and what you sell)? I will not be selling online or out of state at this time. Trying to wrap my mind around some of the items like Cost of Goods Sold and such. How do you account for the raw material purchased compared to the items you make out of it? Atter you sell an item and buy more material is the rest yours? I know there is more to it but looking for some basic understanding. Thanks Jim

    I may have missed it but do you clean your blades before using them? I have found that there might be a little oil on them that could cause the slipping. When this started did you just change blades? I would remove the set screws and clean them and rough up a bit just to give it a try. With the blade going sloppy sounds like slippage. Just what I have found.
