    I have tried multiple things with mixed results. I will try some better quality brushes. The area I want to paint is very tiny. Just getting poor results with the wood choice. Oak does not seem to work well. Baltic Birch was the best with water colors but as others mentioned it raised the grain.

    I always make several of the military puzzles to give away at my shows. I used the puzzle pattern for the bear and made a USCG puzzle with it. At my shows I look for hats or shirts with military logos. My last show I found a USCG hat. Turned out to be parents of a Coast Guard member. They got the puzzle. I also made some of the military plaques for an American Legion Post. They wanted a Space Force one also. I was able to make one using the Space Force logo. I now see a patten available. Hope the clock is well received.

    I have a need to paint some areas that are small and border with other colors. I am having a hard time painting without leaving brush strokes. Currently trying to paint on Oak. I just finished a piece on Baltic Birch with some success using water colors. Looking for some advice on what to use to help with the brush strokes? I have tried mixing with water both mixing and then just dipping the brush in water then then paint

    I have the pattern in the "400 Full-Size Mini-Clock Patterns" book by Rick& Karen Longabaugh page 43. Got it through Amazon.

    I may have missed it but do you clean your blades before using them? I have found that there might be a little oil on them that could cause the slipping. When this started did you just change blades? I would remove the set screws and clean them and rough up a bit just to give it a try. With the blade going sloppy sounds like slippage. Just what I have found.

    Did you remove the setscrew side on the clamp? Even though you crank down one side the other can be slipping. Remove setscrew and try some sandpaper to rough it up. When it gets to smooth it will loose its holding on the blade. Did you tighten the blade and run the machine. Then release tension after to see if it has excessive play.

    Put a new blade in the saw and throw the tension lever. Turn on the saw, then turn off. Releasee the tension. Is there more flex in the blade than when you first put it in? Try the same but this time cut a piece of scrap wood. Again if there is more flex in the blade I would say it is slipping in the holders. I found this out when I was cutting some 1 1/2 stock. I also waxed the blade for every cut in the thick material.

    Thanks to Paul for making the pattern. This is a friends son and Black Lab at a cabin he repaired in the woods of Maine.

    dgman, I use a rack just like yours. Started cutting the patterns from Sue Mey as well. They are stand up birdhouses. I sold 25 of the birdhouses this past weekend. I don't glue the bird in when displayed. I give the customer the option to have whatever bird they choose. Once selected I glue them in before wrapping them. Probably have given away double that to family and friends and folks that just stop by wondering what I'm working on in the garage. Lots of fun to cut.

    Having fun cutting these birdhouses. Been using scrap material of what ever I have and cutoffs from the hardwood dealer. Have cut 50+ with at least the same waiting to be cut. I like the different colors in some Cedar pieces and the grain in the Cypress is nice. Even tried something different with the sock shaped one. Painting the birds different colors and cutting some from Purple Heart and other woods.

    I have found out they are very addictive. Have about 30 cut with another 30 waiting. Several have already disappeared to family. I have also found adding wax to the blade helps. I don't use tape on these. Use rubber cement to glue the pattern on and wax the blade before each cut. Also my wife painted the Blue Bird. She might have a job to do.

    Just want to thank everyone for input. Thanks to Charley L for all his suggestions. Thanks to Denny at Art Crafters Online for his suggestions and for meeting and discussing scroll sawing at his shop. As a side note, if your in the Dayton TN area stop in and see Denny Great person. Also we pickup some sweet corn in Dayton. Best we have ever eaten. As others have mentioned, taking your time is critical and using the right blade for you. Found out that everyone uses a different blade and what works for you is the best. For me I have found the Pegas #4 Super Skip to work for me in multiple materials. I have cut Poplar, Walnut, Cedar, Mahogany, Oak, Pine and Cherry with good results. I will use a home made clamp when cutting the second cut. I try to cut inside the material so there are no cuts to the outside. Make sure material is square. I have also cut the birds out of Purple Heart, Poplar, Cedar, Walnut, Pine, Bubinga, Padauk. Had some pen blanks that I cut them from. Really enjoy the 3D cutting. Jim

    Scrappile, looks great. I like the sub emblem. I completed the all the branches of service for an American Legion Post in GA. I even made one for the Space Command. They are a fun project.

    I have just started cutting these little birdhouses and have a problem with the cut not being square. Been cutting a while but never over 3/4" material and never had a problem with cuts. Have cut lots of puzzles with no issues. So when cutting the thicker material I just started using my same blades I have used in the past. I have tried several different materials. Machine is square. I have an older model Excalibur. As I cut a few I was paying attention to not push sideways on the blade. Still ended up with a bad cut. Thanks to all that I have asked for suggestions. One comment was the blade selection. I had been using Pegas #5 MGT blades. It was suggested to use a Skip tooth blade to help get rid of the saw dust. I have noticed that when I take these apart there is a lot of trapped dust. Looking for ideas to apply to these and all 3D cuts.

    Don't want to bash anyone here. I started scrolling and using FD blades from Mikesworkshop. Had no issues. Still have a wide variety of FD blades. Started using Pegas blades. I mainly use the MG blades. Have used the spiral blades and even some metal cutting blades. I only order from Denny at Artcrafters online. Have no complaints and he has been great. I just like the Pegas blades. Like others have mentioned, it can be a personal choice and the best choice is the one you like and use.
