There are at least 6 Hawks for sale near me right now. And probably the same number or more Dewalts. There are 2 Excaliburs but they bring more money. I know I live in a much more high volume area when it comes to used stuff. Good luck. You'll find something. I have no idea what a saw like yours sells for but I'll bet you can find a Dewalt for about the same or a bit more.

Well, if it were me, I'd take it back before it gets worse. How many Lowe's are near you? Just the one? Maybe take it back and head over to Home Depot and see what they have. You can order online and have it shipped to the store. Have you checked for used saws on Craigslist? I have bought 3 top end saws off of C/L and haven't paid over $300 for any of them. I'm going to pick up another one Monday and it's a Hegner for $150 with stand. Don't be in a hurry and good things come your way. Too bad you're so far away. I have a great Dewalt that I'm going to sell once I get the Hegner home. I would take that saw back though.

Just for the sake of narrowing down where the squeak is coming from, You might spray some silicon spray on the blade holder joints while the saw is running in slow speed to see if the noise goes away. I'm not sure of the design of your saw but if it's anything like the Dewalt or other similar saws, there are many joints/brgs. that need to be lubed from time to time. That's where I'd start.

Not too much to improve or change on them JT. As you said. I'm really hoping that the one I'm picking up Monday doesn't have the same speed issue that the last one had. I'll be very happy to find one that is a keeper. I really want saws with entirely different operating systems.

But, can you pass the nickel test at full speed? That's the real question.

First off, I hate calling you Foxfold. You must have a regular name so somewhere along the line, post it, please. Put it in your signature at the bottom as you can see mine. Now, with that said, as to your tension problem, your saw is very similar to a Hegner if I am not mistaken so you should only have to set your tension once at the back of the saw. If I recall on my Hegner, I would tighten the knob in the rear, with the blade in place, to a point where all the slack was out of it. Meaning the knob/bolt in the rear. Once that is done, you pull the lever at the front of the saw nearest to you. That is what actually is applying the tension to the blade. You can make fine adjustments at the rear with the knob but once that's done, you shouldn't have to mess with it again until you change blades and possibly not even then. I'm going by memory on that. I'm going to give you a link to download/read the manual for the Hegner saw on Advanced Machinery website. I take it you don't have the manual for yours. If you do have it, it should tell you how to apply tension in the correct steps. That's truly weird. I had an open dozen blades from a batch that I had purchased from Bear Woods. I was at the end of them and opened up the new gross batch that I got from DnD. That's when I noticed that one end of all of them had that little weird end on them. I "assumed" that they were in the process of marking their blades as to which end was up like F/D does with the little dimple. Anyway, I put the first one in with that end up and started cutting. I notice right away that it was cutting ok but leaving a ragged edge on the pattern paper on top. It was getting hard to follow the line. Then the light bulb went on and I looked to see if the blade was in correctly. I found that it was upside down. That's when I posted about joining the club. So, I've got an entire gross of blades with the bottom end marked, not the top. None of my blades has that squared notch like you show in your pictures. So, it looks to me as though the sharpened wire was going through the cutting machine and getting cut at the wrong spot or something of that nature. I did contact DnD and told them about my blades. They wrote back and asked if I was having any trouble with breakage. I wrote back that I wasn't. They wrote back and told me to let them know if I did have any problems and they would swap out my blades with new ones and that I would have to send them the old blades. I will keep an eye on them but I don't see that there will be any breakage. At least from what I have been cutting. I was cutting red oak, stacked 4 high, 1/4 inch each ply for a total of one inch. Cut just fine once I figured out which end to use. Time will tell.

Wayne, you and others who have helped me with Inkscape all seem to be on the East end of the country. I sure wish you all were a bit closer to me. I'd sit in your home and MAKE you teach me Inkscape. LOL!

Ok, now I'm confused. Well, at my age, that's nothing new. But what I have is a gross of blades that have that little cut-off corner at the end but I don't have a notch in any of my blades. And the cut-off corner is on the bottom. That's where I got mixed up in the first place being as how F/D has their dimple on the top I assumed that it would be the same with the Pegas blades. Now, I'm going to have to inspect what I have and make sure I didn't get any of the defective blades.

Rolf, you got me to thinking. What if a person just reversed the blade holders on a Hegner and put the quick clamp under the table and put the other end above the table? Would it be that difficult to clamp the blade "blind" under the table? Just thinking out loud here. Or, maybe put quick clamps on both ends? There has to be a way to improve the Hegner blade clamping hassle.

Just like a kid at Christmas time huh?

I'm sort of confused. Aren't we all here because of our love for scrolling? What difference does it make if it takes a bit of time when that is the whole idea behind our hobby? I can understand it if you are in a high volume situation but this is supposed to be a hobby and a hobby is a "pass time". Relax, slow down, enjoy yourself. I enjoy the sawing much more than the sanding and finishing. Partly because of my ignorance on finishes.

On my Hegner, there was a soft membrane rubber cover over the switch. Is yours the same? I can't imagine how the dust is getting past that if you have it. I'm going to try to make mine as dust free as possible now that I know it can become a problem. Thanks for posting your fix.

You folks who live in the COLD are nuts. I hate going outdoors if I'm uncomfortable wearing shorts and tee shirts. I've had my time living in the cold weather. No thanks. There is a reason that I live where I live. I put up with the traffic, crowds, taxes, politics and every other negative just to stay comfortable outside. We have a/c and heat but rarely run either one. So, with that said, best of luck to you in your 30° weather.

Thanks Paul. You and I have talked many times about the Hegner saw that I had. I'm hoping this one doesn't have the same problem. As to the quick clamp, it has it already as well as the quick release arm. The only thing that I can tell so far is that it is missing the bellows. As suggested above, I may just install a vac system if I determine that this saw is what I am hoping it is. If not, well it will go back up for sale. I'm going to make room for it this time by selling my Dewalt. Somebody will get a very nice running saw if they buy it. Either way, I'm happy with my EX21 and I hope to have the same feeling with the Hegner. I realize there is a huge difference in how they operate but the last Hegner wasn't a problem once I got past the speed problem. Wish me luck. I'll find out on Monday.

My first order of Pegas was from Bear Woods. I didn't realize at the time that they are in Canada. It took 2 weeks to get my order. The last time I ordered Pegas blades was from DnD and I got them clear across the U.S. in about 3 days. Fantastic service. I do agree that their website sure does need some help though.
