  1. Is it possible to scroll saw designs out of old pallet wood and if so, what blade do you recommend? Thanks!
  2. Thankfully he didn't have any injuries
  3. Metalscroll...... he is pretty lazy for a hiker and insists on being carried. I carried him for a while and then I had my 4 year old buddy carry him, but he kept dropping him and Rowan wasn't pleased
  4. Thanks everyone! Took Rowan out today with the family and got some more pictures of him. Dick - I have a LOT of projects in mind I want to do... gotta work on finding wood.... I have gotten a lot of great suggestions on where to look, just need to find the time to do it I have more designs in my head too.... just got to get them onto paper
  5. Thanks everyone! Finally gave him a name too.... Rowan.... I'm pretty happy with him Gave him a nice beeswax finish after I painted him, so he is ready to go hiking next time we go out.
  6. So happy to hear you are doing better! Can't wait to see pictures!
  7. Today is my first day back to scroll sawing and I have decided to make a gnome. My family and I go hiking, as often as our schedules and Hubby's health allows, and I often find really neat places in the woods, where I imagine gnomes could live. I have, for a long time now, wanted a gnome to carry with me and position in these places and take pictures. Today I found a really really cool heart shaped decay spot in a fallen tree... I mentioned again how I wish I had a gnome and my Hubby said "well get one".... so I did something else.... I made one I'm not an artist, so it took many tries to create the pattern I had in my head. He is all cut out and ready to be painted. Just waiting for my younger daughter to share her paint (she is rocking my grandson to sleep at the moment). In the meantime, here are some progress pictures Thanks for letting me share! Done giving him his clothes, face, and hair I think he turned out pretty good. Now he just needs a name. Update 7/29 Rowan is just 5" tall Got some pictures of him today where it seems a gnome might live
  8. Turned out beautiful! Great job!
  9. He looks great!!!!!! Awesome job!
  10. Beautiful cutting job!
  11. Thanks everyone!
  12. Thanks everyone! I made some more, but almost out of wood.... starting to eye the neighbors' furniture LOL
  13. My nephew is named after Captain Jack Sparrow, so I made this ornament for him. I'm really proud of this one. The teeth were hard, but after all the help from this board, I was able to create this piece. I stained it and also wood burned "Captain Jack" on the back. Thanks for looking!
  14. What a difference experience makes! Thank you all for the help today. Up until now I have been printing the patterns, cutting them with scissors, tracing them onto the wood, and then finally cutting them out. I had read about using tape and glue, but it wasn't until today, after encouragement and advice from you all here that I finally went ahead and did it. It definitely took some doing, because I don't have the supplies on hand that you all use (I know it is embarrassing to be a creative arts teacher and not have a glue stick LOL). I finally ended up using packing tape on the wood, with the pattern glued on with permanent spray adhesive, which I had on hand. I didn't want to use the spray on the actual wood, because I'm not kidding when I say permanent LOL. I just finished my first project and I'm happy. Still no where near as well done as the projects I have seen here, but so much better than when I was tracing the patterns. Thank you all for the suggestions and thank you to Dick and Clayton for the woods and blades that I have been using!
  15. Still learning! I started with the nativity, but then did the two easier ones to practice. Going to try making some glue and cutting them out with the pattern on top instead of hand cutting the pattern with scissors and then tracing it on. Thanks for looking
  16. Amazing!!!!! You are so talented!
  17. excellent idea Larry... I should have thought of that! Do I need glue and tape or just one or the other?
  18. Ok here is my first attempt. I still don't have anything to glue down the pattern, so I'm tracing it and then cutting, I think that it is making it much much harder, but it is what it is
  19. thanks friends! With encouragement from you all, I did make one. I didn't do the details, but the general idea is there. Will post a picture in a minute.
  20. I'm going to attempt to make the nativity ornament from here http://www.stevedgood.com/2014ornaments.pdf This will be the first time I have done that kind of detailed work. I'm going to be using a flying dutchman blade and some 1/4" wood that Dick (heppnerguy) sent to me. Is there a trick to make those very very detailed facial features? I'll admit I'm a little afraid to try, but I want to make some as gifts for Christmas this year. Thanks for the advice! Kelly
