  1. I love a clean shop but never seem to have one. I try to force myself to do it after every major job. I remember in shop class so many years ago the teacher would stop work 10 minutes early and everyone had to grab a broom. I hated it then but understand it now. What I have learned along the way is the the hardest part of cleaning (or anything for that matter) is simply getting started. Once started it's hard to stop,
  2. I would not paint the inside BUT I would attach a large washer either inside or outside of the opening. Birds require a certain size opening if it's too big they woun't use the house. What you will find is that squirrls or other birds will chew away the opening and ruin the house.
  3. I'll try something like that, and I do have the lid help down with bungee starps. Thanks
  4. If you find it isn't working for you try a jig saw, a good one will cut fast and true and being corded won't run out of power in the middle of a cut. Other than drill's I haven't had a lot of luck with cordless tools.
  5. Do you get saw dust coming out of the garbage can when the planer is blowing it in? I have the same planer and it makes a mess every time I use it.
  6. Yeah but everyone is just dying to get that wood.
  7. That's really a good idea who would have thought of making doll furniture. Yours looks very professional.
  8. It shouldn't be your browser it woud be yor email. Yahoo allows you to send large attachments http://www.worldstart.com/how-to-send-large-email-attachments-with-yahoo-mail/ If you haven't tried Firefox as your browser give it a try it has a lot of nice features and is safer.
  9. As a newbe I'm curious, whouldn't just making a photo copy of the finished piece be the same thing?
  10. Try this web site they may be able to connect you with a supplier for what you need. http://www.footpoweredmachinery.com/
  11. I watched every video and read every review I could find and settled on the Excalibur EX 21. It was a toss up between the Dewalt and the EX 21. Because of the blade changing arrangement of the Hegner I did not think it was for me. I got rid of my other saw because of the balde changing system. It was so bad that I never used the saw .I didn't go with the Dewalt because of problems that I had read about as well as you had to buy or make something to hold the saw up while changing the blade.
  12. You might want to look into an air handler this is exactly the problem that they are designed for. The box fan idea is a very good suggestion however since it is much less expensive and will do the same thing only not as well.
  13. After reading about Ducky's accident it got me to thinking of a few close calls that I have had and wonder what others have suffered through. My most memorable but not the worst was when I was sanding a thin piece of wood on a stationary belt sander. The wood got so thin that it slid under the stop taking my fingers with it. My finger got jammed and the 60 grit paper proceeded to sand my fingers down. When they were sanded to a thickness less than the opening under the stop I was able to pull them out. A trip to the emergency room ensued.
  14. Looks great!
  15. Been there done that doesn't work. You could do it with soild wood or maybe even Italian bending plywood but not BB. Try putting a strip in your oven and give it a try but 90 degrees is asking a lot.
  16. Looks great, one of the reasons I bought a scroll saw was to make portraits. Now all I have to do is learn how!
  17. Before giving up on it try some wood bleach. You should be able to get it at the Woodcraft store.
  18. Great ideas, these shoud be hot items around mother's and father's day.
  19. I can't say which is better but the question might be which is worse. I just went through the selection process knowing that I wanted a saw that I would enjoy using. If you get one that the blade change is a major production or if the vibration will shake your teeth out then you can be pretty sure that you will never use it. Do a nation wide search on craigslist for scroll saws and you will come up with hundreds of scroll saws. The problem is that they will all be starter saws. Saws like Craftsman, Reilant, Harbor Freight, AMT etc. The reason is I'm guessing is the after a couple of uses the owners give up on them. I was in the same boat with a Delta that I had. I'm very happy with the new saw that I ended up buying. I'm only a beginner but I want the problems that I encounter to be because of my lack of skill rather than because my saw will never cut right.
  20. Yep I just finished up a seesaw with a horses head at both ends. Only problem was that I attached the heads facing the wrong direction. It took an hour to get them perfectly centered only to have to remove them, reinstall them, fix the holes in the plank, sand the plank and repaint it. All in all 2 1/2 hours extra work. The worst part about it is that I looked at it first and was sure it was on right.
  21. Larry it's Mr lucky until your have them growing in your yard! I have a dozen of them including one monster with a circumference of 13 feet. In the fall I have to park 30 feet away from it because the walnuts will destroy the car! I have an agreement with the squirrels that I'll treat them well if they remove the walnuts for me. There are so many walnuts that I have to use a snow shovel to get them to one side. You can't mow them or rake them because they are so big and heavy. The one good thing is that I use my band saw on the limbs and have cut some really nice boards. I have found a great place to get hardwood is at second hand stores, flea markets and the curb. Peole are always getting rid of nasty furniture that just begs to be put to better use. I take the stuff home and plane it down,
  22. Thanks to all for the warm welcome. In answer to Larry's question I bought the Excalibur EX 21 from Ray. A good deal of what ever I cut will be from black walnut because I have an abundance of it. I was building a grandfather clock out of mahogany but ended up with a pile of walnut by mistake. It didn't matter since it only cost me $1.00 and a hour of work cleaning it up. I think I'll start with sign I found in the pattern section that says "I never finish anythin" it's fitting for me. As I say to my wife " I said I'll do it, youi don't have to keep nagging me every six months"
  23. I gave up on wood turning and decided to turn my attention to scrolling. I've been doing woodworking all my life and tend to lean towards " instant gratification" projects. Turning gave me that but it also gave me more bowls, boxes and vases that I knew what to do with. When you see people hiding from you, you know that you can't unload any more stuff on them. With scrolling I see instant gratification plus a whole new catagory of items to make. The thing I didn't like about turning was that it was very messy, let me make that very very very messy and very expensive. The lathe was the cheap part in comparison to everything else you needed. I grew up with a Delta Rockwell scroll saw (one of the big things from the 50's) and as a kid only made cut outs of dogs and birds. When it was time to buy my own saw I bought a Delta beginners saw for something like $150.00 I soon learned why it was so cheap. I never used the saw because the blade would constantly come out of the holder. It's true you get what you pay for. I now have a new saw on order thanks to the recommendations of experienced scroll sawers. Once it gets here I'll start making saw dust. I came to this site for patterns but see that it is full of helpful people that love to share their knowledge.
