  1. You're going to screw it up and it's going to be during your last cut or sanding. Just take a deep breath and enjoy making another one.
  2. I finally made an effort and got a picture of Ron Swanson done. I think I need some more practice, but it's a start.
  3. I gave it a try on a random picture or a quail in some grass. My attempt needed a lot of clean up that I don't feel like doing. So my lessons so far, pick a better picture and play around more with the contrast to get a cleaner starting pattern. I'll just have to try again later when I have time.
  4. I'll see if I can give it a shot this weekend.
  5. I might try this with some scrap wood I've got just to play around. Thanks for the inspiration.
  6. I've been messing with the video tutorials I found online, but I think it's just more practice. Although I'd love to hear some tips.
  7. I really must get better at creating patterns like this. I get jealous every time I see something this good. It's worse since my wife is a Chief's fan.
  8. Welcome from sunny Phoenix.
  9. She dies all the cooking and she actually likes it. The family wouldn't survive me cooking.
  10. The wife got me a couple boards for Christmas. 1 purple heart and 1 zebra. Both are 1/2" thick and 4"x4'. She meant to get me 1/4" boards and I suppose I could find someone to resaw them for me - I don't have a bandsaw, but I was thinking maybe I can just make something nice for her out of what I have. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?
  11. I promise to come up with some better designs by next year and I'll even try to start designing before November.
  12. I just learned long ago to ask if she needs another glass of wine and to stay away from the mess that is her side of the sink, closet, or wherever she keeps her stuff.
  13. I might have to get something like that. Right now it's just a bench light and some cheaters.
  14. I’m just getting back into the scrolling after moving home to Phoenix. I’ve got 4 snowflake patterns that need some tweaking. I have to make sure they fit a 4” board but if I can make one more this week I’ll pass them along. Dave
  15. Nice setup. I've always just used an aquarium air pump. Works for me. That or the ever present me blowing on it.
  16. I work in county government and every now and then things like this come across my desk that I just have to laugh at. This is an actual New Jersey traffic sign: You can read the story behind it here: http://www.app.com/story/news/traffic/commuting/2015/09/15/road-sage-parkway-bodies/72276888/
  17. I've been thinking about spending $40 on one of the cheap models I can find on craigslist. I can get a slightly rusted delta 480 (I think) for $50. The problem is my wife just doesn't understand. A saw is a saw to her and there would be no need for a new saw. That and I'd get yelled at for being impatient about Christmas. In the end, the happy wife is more important than my playing with wood. I did find a nice dewalt for $200. I wonder if I can convince her to just go look at that one and "surprise" me for Christmas. I tried tying the tension thing down, but it didn't work well. I'll have to try the locktite.
  18. Bad luck for me. My cheap Ace saw finally died. It just won't hold tension. You can watch the tension lever unscrew itself while it runs. Of course this means it's time for an upgrade so I started really looking for a decent used saw in the area since I can't afford new - kids do that to you. When I talked to the wife, she had already decided she was going to buy me a new saw from all my complaints on the old one. I just have to wait for Christmas. Let's hope she listened when I told her about the Dewalt. Until then I guess I'll live vicariously through your projects and play with the inkscape lessons.
  19. I keep telling myself I'll try doing intarsia some day.

    Saw Bird

Thanks for showing off. I never heard about the cling wrap idea. I just use the blue tape and some spray glue. I was told once the tape helps lubricate the blade. I'm not sure how true that is, but it makes the pattern easy to remove.

  22. Just introducing myself. I've done scrolling on and off for about 10-15 years. Mostly just ornaments that I hand out at Christmas time. I've always used cheap machines like Craftsman or Ryobi. My last, a donated Ace saw finally took a dive so I'm looking for something in a good used machine. Judging by the reviews my choice seems to be Dewalt, RBI, Excalibur, and a couple Deltas. Looking on craigslist I can find a 20 year old RBI for about $250 and just wanted to know if anyone out there thinks it's a decent deal? Thanks Dave
