I think Steve just called it Wood Spirit. It is a relief pattern cut out of one 1” board. Not nominal, but a full inch.The outer portion of the cartoon, or ‘spirit’ is cut at about a 4 degree angle so it sits about 1/2” recessed of the board.

I thought about the rust issue.I will leave this one inside unless I come up with a coating that would resist rust.

I made this Steve Good "relief" wood spirit a couple of weeks ago, but I was not crazy about the mustache area, as it just too big and too empty. I am planning on making another one with a few changes but I have been busy with other issues.Meanwhile I decided that too much work went into the piece to be so disappointed with an otherwise pleasing piece, so I came up with an easy fix. I stuffed some steel wool in both the mustache and eyebrows.

I like it! Nice cuts.

The beer mug was just for me to try to get my feel back after a year long break. I made the Cow Pi for the young lady we bought our house from last year. Her folks owned a dairy farm near here and needed her to come back to help run it. It has been in her family for 6 generations. The silly leaf was for my soon to be 4 year old granddaughter.

I made this vase a while ago. I saw a meme on FB that said "Nude Art is Not Pornography." I contacted the artist, Francois Dubeau, and asked for permission to use his drawing for a scrolled vase which he granted on the condition that I didn't sell it. Anyway, I wasn't thrilled with how it initially came out and it sat around for a while and I came back and filled the fretwork with Filo and liked it much better. The surface wood in African Wenge and the inner layer is walnut and poplar.The vase design is based on a Steve Good design that I modified.

Ralph, a cabinetmaker friend had a couple of actual 1 inch cedar boards in his trash pile. I am a shameless scavenger.

This is from a recent Steve Good pattern. It is made from one board, with the figure's outer perimeter cut with the table set at about a 3 1/2 degree.That allows the wood spirit to protrude a little over half way through from the back. I like the idea, but if I were to make another one I would redesign the mouth/mustache area, as I think it looks too big. On this project I used stains,rather than my normal oils, to try to make the backboard look like barn wood and the have the wood spirit contrast by being lighter. I have very recently built out a new shop and I'm just getting started making sawdust again. I hope to be a bit more active on this site.

Good morning! I haven't been around for a little over a year. I had been fairly new to to scrolling, but a long time stained glass guy that was going to try to start merging the two art forms when disaster struck. I had just pretty much completed building a small shop/studio and was scrolling daily when our septic system began failing rapidly. Long story, but our paid for home of 39 years was on a small lot and even with new technology the county would not give us a permit to put in a new system, leaving us up the proverbial creek without a paddle.So, as having little choice, we moved last year right before Christmas and bought a small house in the city limits of Frederick, MD. Good news: city water and sewage. Nice sized lot. Bad news: there was no garage. Real good news: I have just finished a new 12 x 24 detached shed/studio and got all of my final inspections for the building and electric last week. I have almost finished the interior, having completed walls, ceiling, lighting, French cleats throughout, and have built a couple of new benches. I picked up a used Grizzly dust collector recently and will be working on getting it connected up to my miter saw, sanders, etc. The last things I will setup are the glass area and scrollsaw station, as everything else will come to a halt as soon as I thread the first blade into the Dewalt. I still want to build a small loft and overhead wood storage, but that should be completed by the end of this week.When I am finished I will post a couple of pics of my rustic, treehouse carpentry.

And again my pictures come up off axis. I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

I have now made 4 of these Suns with some variations to the theme. One I gave away without taking a picture of it. In these 3 shown, oneI made the saw " blade" out of 1" red oak and stained it with Minwax Expresso stain.The other two are mounted on real circular saw blades that I painted. All of the Suns were cut from scrap red oak, stained with Minwax Golden Oak and are from Steve Good's pattern, though with some minor changes.

Too cool! I still heat primarily with wood, and still on occasion use bellows.

I have been looking for an understated rose. I hope that you won't mind, but I'm going to use that pattern on my next vase.

Right now I am only about 5 months into my Dewalt, but if I were looking to start all over again the Jet would be high on my list. Bottom feeding would take an adjustment, but, hey, they told me the same thing about the rotary shifter on my Ram truck 3 years ago. That took about 10 minutes, which of course I can never get back. Now, I never look back on that, and I think bottom feeding would be the same if it was well designed.

That is beautiful, and beautifully crafted! I'd like to make something like this for my missus. Where did you get the design?

I have one of my benches set up with a plywood pullout shelf.I mounted the blade directly on the plywood, over to one side, where it is not in the way. It works great! My little shop, like many of you, is like living on a ship. Everything has its place and every nook and cranny gets utilized. This takes up less space than a pair of scissors hanging on a nail!
