I really like this idea. If it works as well as it looks like it will I may mount a board on one of my benches and have this as a permanent fixture in my shop.

S-I-L received her gift today and was very emotional. She remembers that the horse from when it was on her mom's fridge. It was a big hit.

I've been scrolling a lot of 3/4" and 1" red oak lately and believe me, I really appreciate what you have done!

This might be a little lame, but this Swedish horse was around our house for a long time and we think at at my mother-in-law's before that. All of my wife's grandparents migrated here from Sweden. Anyway, my wife's sister's birthday is next week so I thought maybe this was worth a shot for a present and for my first inlay attempt. BTW-now I feel very confident to take on inlay projects.

I have several French cleats on my shop walls. Also, I have Bose 301 speakers on my living room wall that came with metal French cleats. It is, I believe, a hanging technique that has been around for about a 1000 years. You can make them as big, or small, as you need to. From Mike's Workshop: By using 2" clear package tape you will eliminate most burning. Especially in wood with oil (like Purple Heart) and very hard wood. We like to first put the pattern on the wood and then put tape over the pattern. Some like to put it on the wood first. It is all up to the individual. Some might even use a different tape but most like to use the package tape. It is almost like the tape lubricates the blade. Not quite. The tape has a chemical that is like a Silicone and releases friction. If this chemical would not be on top of the tape, you never would be able to un-roll the tape from itself.

I've been taping the wood with packing tape, and using 3-M lightly on tape and the pattern.I have recently started applying salt to the tape with a standard salt shaker before applying the pattern as it minimizes slippage.

For the work we put into this stuff I don't mind paying somewhat of a premium for good material. Quality isn't expensive, it's priceless, especially when accompanied with friendly,knowledgeable customer service.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules on sharing an experience I had while purchasing wood from an on-line vender. As many of you know I like to make vases with a test tube sandwiched in the middle. If I can get 1", or 4/4 wood for that middle piece it makes for a nicer finished product, not to mention easier for me. Not nominal 1", but actual 1" thick. So I've been thrilled with the 1/4, 1/8, etc wood that I've been getting from this company but their scroll saw wood selection on-line only goes to 3/4" I called yesterday and asked if they could get me 1" and if so, at what price and what varieties? Here's what I was told: Yes, they could get me 1" but if it had to be sanded on both sides and exactly 1" they would have to mostly plane it from 2" stock and the price would be higher. But, if I could live with 15/16" they could supply it in every variety that they carry, at the same price as the 3/4" on their price list. I can actually deal with anything 7/8" or over. I thought it was great to find a company that was accommodating,pleasant, with great customer service, and a terrific product line. I'll be ordering a lot of my wood from Ocooch Hardwoods.

Thanks for taking the time for the in depth initial impressions.I am new to scrolling and bought a Dewalt a while back to get started with. I am reasonably content, but I am predisposed to a bit of prejudice regarding them because of issues I'd had with some of their other tools over the years when I was doing general handyman work.As I get better at scrolling, and wear the DW down, I will be looking ahead to my next saw, and I'm a sponge for information about all of them.

Yes, all 1" oak. One board that I had left over from some shelving project. I cut the scrap in half, made the grain horizontal on the back piece, stained it with several coats of MinWax Expresso. The sun was grain vertical, stained with Golden Oak.I used FD UR 5's and 7's for the whole thing. If I were to do another one, or a variation of it, I think I would use an old 7 1/2" circular saw blade for the back piece, paint it black, and glue the sun to it. Or make the sun bigger and use a 10" blade.
