    Excalibur EX-16

In the UK, there has been many comments on the Excalibur Scrollsaws, it's problems and how it compares with the likes of the Hegner. If anyone is interested, they can se these comments on UK Workshop at ...... http://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/excalibur-scrollsaws-t95005.html The Excalibur was being sold in the UK through one distributer, but that has now ceased and another similar machine has taken it's place as the Axminster Trade Ex 16, Ex21 & Ex30 with a 3 year guarantee and the earlier problems have been overcome. These machines have only just come on to the marked in the UK and there are a couple of reviews on these also in the Scrolling - Scrollsaws section. I have just purchased the new Ex16 version and have reviewed this in UKW. Perhaps some of you may be interested. Malcolm

    Excalibur EX-16

Advertised my old scrollsaw yesterday and sold it today. The intention was to then go and get an Excalibur EX16 and move up a gear or two. Unfortunately the sole distributer in the UK (Axminster) have withdrawn all Excaliburs in order to re-brand them as 'Axminster Excalibur Trade' and in thier own business colours - Grey & Red. Launching 3rd week in February. Now I have no saw until then. They say that the machines have not changed and will in fact be a little lower in price, but as the brand was so good, why does it need re-branding? Any comments over on your side of the pond about any changes with Excalibur there? Malcolm

    Excalibur EX-16

Nice to hear the reports on the Ex16, as it's the one I favour at present. I have not done a lot of scrollsaw work, having only been in woodwork 2 years in retirement, but bandsaw boxes have been fun to make. http://wwwbadgerwoodcrafters.co.uk Thought this year to have a go at intarsia, but need a better saw than the old 16" one I have.. Malcolm
  4. Hi Len, thanks for the kind remarks on my boxes. When I started I was using a 1/4 and 3/16 blades and happy with them, but did get a few burns that needed more sanding. I then progresses to the 1/2 blade using the Carter Stabilizer, which only supports the blade at one point above the table and no lower guides at all. The cutting allows tighter turns and there is no problem with the blade as the support is at the back of the blade only and no side support. That allow the blade to turn, unlike the blades that are supported with side guides, I have my web site at http://www.badgerwoodcrafters.co.ukand the Etsy shop site http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/badgerbandsawboxes that take care of the selling but don't do any craft shows or other selling. Being retired, I am not bothered how many I sell, as it is a hobby and selling just helps with more timber supplies, so as the number of completed boxes reduces, then I make a few more, but like to try different designs from time to time and try to keep the quality high with a good finish. Last year I sold 15, which is no great number, but I don't want this hobby to turn into a business where I am pressed to complete work, as I have other interests and do like plenty of holidays abroad. Malcolm
  5. Thanks Rob, but Ian hasn't made them for many years in that size. He would like to get hold of suitable coils so that he could start making them again. I get all my blades from Tuffsaw as the quality is superb and he's such a nice guy working on his own. Malcolm
  6. Over here the 1/4" blades are easily obtainable, but since getting the Carter Stabilizer, the 1/8" blades are far easier to turn and the best maker in my opinion is Ian Black of Tuffsaw, who makes excellent quality blades. See his site at http://www.tuffsaws.co.uk. As an example, a supertuff Carbon blade of 3378mm x 1/8" x 14tpi costs £16 plus postage and VAT. I have sent an e-mail to Carter Industries to see if they know of any manufacturers of a 1/16" or 2mm blades. It was the Pegus video that got me going on this. AMAZINGSCROLLER, you can see my boxes on http://wwwbadgerwoodcrafters.co.uk, or the Etsy shop at http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/badgerbandsawboxes Malcolm
  7. I'm looking for a supplier of narrow, carbon bandsaw blades, less then 1/8" which I am using at present. Anyone know where I can try please. It needs to be 133" long (3378 mm) and eithe 1/16" or 2mm would do. Malcolm
  8. Excellent boxes and the glasswork is exceptional. Never tried that but do like my Dremel. Malcolm
  9. Pleased to se you joining in Yann.
  10. From the other side of the big pond, welcome. Enjoy the sawdust whenever you can.
  11. Very nice. I havent seen this sort before and they do stand out. Should be very popular with the firemen and Linemen. Well done and thanks for showing them.
  12. It just goes to show that real talent will always shine through and be recognised. Well done Dick
  13. Hey Steve, if that was my first one I would be very pleased indeed. You have rounded the petals well and given it a great finish. You should now frame it and be pleased that you have the first of many already finished. Well done.
  14. Thats a nice first effort and good colours used. Well done. Can't wait to get my new scrollsaw and make a start on this intarsia.
  15. Very nice video production, something I have not got the hang of, but perhaps I should try it sometime.
  16. Hey Alex, that's a really great job on the box with some unique ideas that you have managed to put into practice. All the equipment in the shop helps a lot and you certainly know how to use them To be so acomplished and comfortable in the workshop at your age is really remarkable and gives you a real head start on your friends, with something that most of them will not be able to do. Far better to be active there than wasting time elsewhere. I hope that you manage the time to continue your hobby and with your studies, that's not always easy. But if you can manage to put in a little time occassionally, it will be worth it as you have the makings of a future expert. Good luck to you and I hope to see more of your work soon. Please let us all know what the result of the competion was. Also, well done Dad, for showing him the way.
  17. Welcome Doug, I'm also a new mamber from across the big pond in the UK. Seem like a noice bunch here, so I'm in for the duration and looking to up my game with a new scrollsaw soon Good luck
  18. Hiya Decker, welcome to SSV. I'm not so far from you, just south of Birmingham and a new member myself. I had a small 16" Record scrollsaw until justr recently when I sold it with the idea of buying an Excalibur EX16 or 21, but on the same day as the sale, the Excaliburs were withdrawn by Axminster to be re-branded as Axminster Ex16-21 & 30 Trade and launched later this month. There will be a couple of small changes, the work holdown/foot is changing as is the power switch, which are discribed as improvements? So I'm waiting for the launch 17th February to have a look-see. Not done a lot of scrolling, but would like to start Intarsia and seeif I can make the grade of some of the guys on this site, Good luck and keep in touch.
  19. Hi Larry, sorry to hear of your plight, but you are already half way to recovery with your very possitive attitude. Get well soon. Malcolm
  20. Unless I'm wrong, most people check out a site carefully before joining in. I do anyway, with all the sites I run with. I have only been a member for a very short time and not really a scroller, as most of you are. I have dabbled, but intend to do more when I can get my hands on a new Excalibur EX16. Here in the UK, Axminster is the distributor, but has just withdrawn the Excalibur range in order to re-badge it with their own colours and call them by the new name of Axminster Excalibur Trade. They will be launched in the 3rd week of February and I am registered as interested as soon as they are available. Everyone on here is so very helpful and we all know that a good forum runs well this way. Even though we have a rather large Pond between us, I love it. Thank you all.
  21. Thats a lot of excellent work. Looks delightful.
  22. Ahhhh yes, but will it keep the birds at bay? Nice job and rather unique.
