  1. I have been using Lacquer thinner for a long time now and am still standing vertical! At some point you have to pick the pattern up to get it on the wood. A pair of rubber gloves would solve your problem!
  2. Don't forget to use packing tape on your pieces. You will notice the difference! I have used Alder some and never had a problem cutting it. Have even Chip carved some.
  3. I like the look of a Lacquer finish so first I spray the piece with sand & sealer then once that dries I use Gloss Lacquer.
  4. I've had my 26 " Hawk since 2002 and not a problem so far! Only thing I've had to do is replace the upper blade holder! Just ordered another holder and they got it to me very fast! So the service seems to have improved over the years! Good luck!
  5. Sloan's woodworking carries a good selection of small and short brass screws. Check them out also!
  6. I don't use any lubricant on any of my blades. I do though use clear packing tape over most of my patterns to help the blade cutting. Try with the tape and then without and you will notice the difference.
  7. Bone and Antler have about the same bad smell. Just make sure you wear a mask especially since it is spatulated! Good luck!
  8. I use painters tape when I want to put center lines on a piece of wood to match the center lines on the pattern I want to cut out. I use packing tape all the time now as it does help the cutting better.
  9. Sloan's Workshop has brass screws as short as 1/8" but on my 1/4" backing board I usually use the 1/4" brass screws. Tommy
  10. I sign all my scrolled work now. I have a stamp saying Made in USA Scrolled by , then I sign my name!
  11. Dave I use to use the spray cans and was going through a lot of them as you are. Very costly! I switch over to a gravity fed spray gun and have been using it for years. depending on what I'm working on I try and get several pieces ready to spray at one time before spraying. I use sand and sealer first then the laquer with as many cost as I like. Good luck!
  12. I guess I do things the hard way! When I do any inlay I plane the woods I will be using down to 3/16" and the stack them. I use the FD Puzzle blades when doing this. What I've found is you get 2 for 1 by doing that with no waste. Just my input! Good Luck!
  13. Hang in there BB Stay away from Festivals! lol
  14. I sticker all the green lumber that I get and keep it stored a dry area. Also on small logs that I want to use I melt down cheap wax and coat both ends and store them in a dry area also. Tommy
  15. You might try and locate another Scroller in your area to help getting you started in the right direction with some one on one instruction? There is plenty of great help here but one on one or in a class is even better! Good Luck and don't Rush it!
  16. Edward, good looking pieces and the display was done very well! Don't be discouraged on the sales! Keep making sawdust! Tommy
  17. When I have to cut thicker woods I use the Polar blades. More clean up on the back side though. Let the blade do the cutting and don't rush it! Good Luck!
  18. Thanks for the info Josh, I knew Mike had sold but didn't realize it was to WTB. Interesting how they can get the blades to you pretty quick but slower on getting patterns to you! Tommy
  19. You can also find Flying Dutchman blades at Mikesworkshop.com The ship them very fast and the shipping is only $3.00 I have been using them for over 11 years now and don't try anything else!
  20. I have tried several different chucks for the tiny drill bits and have found that the TJ3320 3 pc Pin Chuck Set made in India works the best for me. When I took a course on Scrolling from Gail Jennings he gave me a couple of these and I have found more on ebay! All the other chucks I have tried the bits wobble and as you know that is not good when working on your projects! Good Luck!
  21. Looks a lot like Soft Maple with the color that is in it! Tommy
  22. I got a new RBI 226 back in 2002 and paid $1,200.00 for it. The only thing I have had to do is change the upper blade holder because I use it so much. I have seen used 226's go for as low as $500.00. I have several friends that have the Dewalt and they like them. Good luck on the hunt! Tommy
  23. I work with 3/8 to 1/2 wood and I put a 1/2 backer board on the back of most my work with a thin bead of glue around the entire piece. That helps for the most part. Good luck Dave!
  24. Alot of times I'll take a marker and dot the hole! I'll have to try the pencil idea though! Thanks Tommy
  25. They are the best that I have found!
