Looks great. Stained mine today. Probably going to use spirals next time. Took FOREVER with flat blades.

I like the idea, but I don't think I explained it right. I'm looking for a pattern for after the baby is born with name, size, and weight.

I did some searching and didn't come up with many options. I know most of you have been doing this much longer than me and all of you are better at it. Does anyone have any suggestions for a birth announcement pattern?

Between the scroll saw, table saw, miter saw, and planer I make a good amount of sawdust. I've been throwing some away and making some piles outside. I'd like to find some sort of solution long term. What do you guys do with the sawdust you make?

Thanks for the input. I almost did it that way, but I like it like this. I wanted something dark and minimalist like the original drawing.

Made a couple of these yesterday. 1/8" birch plywood with 1/4" oak plywood backer.

My wife has a silhouette machine (same thing) and it's pretty amazing. I haven't used it for sroll saw patterns, but it would be really good for it. More expensive than a regular printer, though. She uses it for stickers (window decals, coffee cups, water bottles) and t-shirt transfers. Pretty decent side business. She designs her own stuff for it, so no buying cartridges for anything.

It's made to be three separate pieces glued together, but someone on a facebook group posted a picture of it one piece and it looks good. -

Great work. Are these inlaid? The top one doesn't look like it but the bottom one kind of does. Impressive either way.

Anyone done one of these patterns? I just got mine in the mail today and I saw it said to do bevel cuts around the different sections, but I'm not sure I want to. Anyone here done this pattern without the bevel cuts?

Sorry about that. Should have mentioned it above. It's from scrollsawartist.com. They also have the same pattern, but in two layers so it's easier to do.

Not selling this one. Made it for a going-away plaque for a co-worker. Might make another to sell, though.

Thanks, everyone. It really wasn't as difficult as it looks. Backer and bottom layer are both one piece each. The holes in the spine/back piece and the scales (maybe that's what they are) were done with spirals, so that was tremendously easier.

Finished this for a going away present for a co-worker. Walnut backer, beech bottom layer, and the rest is a fence picket I planed down. Could have done better with the stain. I need to make a stand for this and the Steelers helmet we're giving him. Pattern from scrollsawartist.com.

Cut it into silver dollar sized wavy line blocks instead of interlocking pieces for that extra degree of difficulty.

If all you're doing is cutting the letters out, you could just use the blade on one pass and have that as your cutout instead of tracing around the cutout like you do with a flat blade. I know I'm not explaining this well, but with the spiral blade you're just cutting on one line. With the flat blade, you're basically cutting around the letter.

Makes sense. It's whitewood, which surprisingly has a good grain, cuts very easily, and is very cheap. Might do these types of products with it from now on. It's supposed to be country/folk looking.

I made a sign that will most likely get hung in a bathroom over the weekend. I stained it with natural stain, but I don't know what type of finish to use. I usually use a spray poly on my finished items, but I'm afraid shower humidity will affect it over time (as well as the glue holding the backer on). Do I have to use marine varnish to be safe?

So glad I have a table saw. It's saved me a lot of time prepping my materials. I need to get a band saw so I can trim down my own wood now. It's impossible to get 1/4" wood that isn't plywood near me. Big box stores have a couple pieces, but they're usually warped and only 6" wide.

Depending on your skills with a spiral blade, I think this is doable. If you get a large spiral blade, like a #7, I think it would turn out really well.

Same here. I don't have the time to read about it just yet, but there is a great section here with lots of how-to articles. Also, there are lots of youtube videos that show you how.

If you look closely to the blown up picture you can see the slats that are glued to the back. Disclaimer: I only know this because I just bought the lord's prayer pattern just like this and it says how to do it.
