  1. Stack cut four of these today. Keeping one for my house. Charles Dearing pattern. 33" wide on 1/8 baltic birch plywood. Done with Olson #0 spirals. Definitely the most challenging one I've done so far. Pretty happy with it.
  2. If you google image search pumpkin carving patterns a lot of them can work for scroll saw patterns.
  3. Yes, I did. I glued the walnut pieces together and let that dry. When that was done, I glued the aspen (really soft and no fun to sand) to the walnut backer and clamped it all down. Then three coats of spray poly.
  4. My Dewalt does this and this is how I fix mine. Just tap the pedal to move the motor a bit (just tap a fraction of a second). It will raise after that. While figuring this out, I also found out that if I tap the pedal too quickly twice, the saw will run faster than I've ever seen it. Way faster than if you had the speed knob all the way turned up. If you let off the pedal and wait a second it will go back to regular speed, but this has happened a few times.
  5. My favorite sister-in-law is a teacher, so I made her a new name plaque for her desk. Aspen and walnut. Font is Ancestory.
  6. I don't think I'm explaining it right. I'm buying regular 1/8" plywood from them. I'm also going to buy probably 5/4 hardwood from them and have them sawmill bandsaw it into three pieces about 3/8" each. I don't know how rough they'll be, but I have a planer so I can get them smoother if need be.
  7. Got mine this morning. Guess I spoke too soon. Trying to cut at least one today.
  8. Thanks everyone. Gonna try stacking 4 1/8" and use a 0 blade.
  9. Anyone know how long it takes to get the pattern? I, too, got inspired yesterday morning and bought the pattern and birds from her site, but haven't gotten a confirmation email or the pattern from her.
  10. It's a sawmill. Checking it out tomorrow when my sister-in-law goes back home. They only sell hardwood 4/4" an thicker, but they will saw one down for me if I buy one, so I'll essentially get three boards for the price of one (plus the $15 fee saw fee).
  11. Here's his page. If you find him on Facebook (he posted in the Scrollsaw Squawk group) his patterns are on sale right now. http://www.woodenvisions.com/
  12. I'm heading to a new sawmill tomorrow and will definitely be getting some new plywood. I've been using 1/4" because it's what I can get closest. I'm at least getting 1/8" for backers, but I thought it'd be easier to stack cut 1/8" three at a time, but is it be too thin to use spirals?
  13. Thanks everyone. Unfortunately, not sure the smell is going anywhere. It sat in my shop for over a month and still smells as badly as when I brought it home. Hopefully someone can put up with it long enough to pay buy it.
  14. Thank you. Someone will hopefully be buying it this week.

Made this for a (possible) client today. Think the wood is red oak that's rotted around the edges (and smells like poop, literally). Finished with some BLO. First time using it. We'll see how it goes, but I'm liking the look so far. Pattern is from someone here, but I can't remember who.
  16. Thank you everyone. I should have said in the beginning but yes, it is a Charles Dearing pattern. His stupid sale right now is draining my pockets. Sometime soon I'll be making the R2D2 pattern I bought from him and, if he's still selling it, buy the C3PO pattern, too. I really don't like Star Wars, but my wife is a lifelong fan. Also, I should have put a second coat of ebony stain on the backer. I like it the way it is, but I think it'd look better darker. On more intricate pieces with larger cutouts like this, I like doing an ebony stain on birch plywood backer. It looks a little more put together than foam board or felt, even though I still like using both.
  17. Finished this for a friend a few days ago. Made the frame to go with it. 1/4" birch ply with luan backer. Cut with #3 Olson spirals. Not happy with the luan backer. Stained with ebony and it just made it darker, not black.
  18. Anyone have a picture with this installed? Not sure what I'm looking at.
  19. Beautiful work. Is this company still around? I can't find any information on them except an address.
  20. Good work. Curious about the symbol. Is it a society of some kind? Should I be hiding after asking?
  21. Thanks, everyone. I bought some felt this weekend and might give it a shot with some smaller pieces later, but I got some black foam board that works well and looks great. I love wood grain, so some projects get a coat of ebony stain on thin birch plywood with no sealer. Looks great, but more cost and weight.
  22. I've just started doing portraits, but this should apply to most things we cut. What size do you make your backers if you sandwich a piece of felt between them and the cut piece? Ideally I'd like it to all be one size, but if I use a plywood backer (probably 1/8") the side you can see would be different than the main piece. Do you normally make the backer a bit smaller to hide it if you can?
  23. I'm starting my first large pattern tomorrow. It'll be about 20" across and about 15" high. Using a spiral blade for most of it, but might use the flat blade for a few long, straight spots. Any suggestions or tips for large patterns? Using a dewalt 788 saw for it.
  24. Looks great. Would you mind sharing the font you used on the pink one? The one that says Rita.
  25. Anyone here use Japan Drier? Someone on a Scroll Saw facebook group I'm on recommended it with BLO. It's sole purpose is to make oils dry faster?
