hello to you too Larry i'm under 30 miles from possum trot. i also used to live in Metropolis IL... home of Superman (still have lots of family there... my 3 cousin, that i made mad for not "climbing back on that horse" by saying "not happening, they make cars so i don't have to ride a horse" is now the mayor) -chris

I have had A LOT of things happening in the last week. i am ecstatic to report EVERY SINGLE ONE IS GREAT! besides the the wonderful things i have already posted i have one i will make more public when it begins. one thing that is heavy on my heart is that i have been listing to the audio book of "a fault in our stars" by John Green. if you don't know it is a story of true love of 2 teens and just happen to be fighting cancer. (the movie is almost the book word for word). this book is dedicated to a real life girl that sadly lost her battle with cancer. her name IS, Esther Earl. tomorrow is the day devoted to her one wish, that people express the "non-romantic" love that we share together, so to honor this request of a courageous girl, if you can see this post I LOVE YOU (even if you can't see it). i do not post this only because Esther asked me to... i say this because it is true. I LOVE YOU even at your worst times, when you feel the weight of the world upon you, feeling alone, and that no one cares, you must except the fact that you are wrong because I LOVE YOU ALL. thank you for allowing me to just drop in when i can make time and still treating me like i belong here. Happy Esther Day!!! https://youtu.be/8zKklfa-UVM

thank you for the review Keven. i have never used an EX but am thinking of getting one for my wife. i started with a wen, then a craftsman, and now the hawk vs226. the hawk is many levels ahead of my first 2. i have the same vibration problem at 5/8 speed but did eliminate the low speed vibration by making and H frame to fit the inside bottom of the legs. on the cross bar of the H i added a platform with 40lbs of weight and keep my "go tool box", about an other 20lbs and now i have zero vibration up to the 5/8 speed. chris

I have known the owners of the Superman meuseum for years. Many years ago I made a mask that is on display and talked to them about that. Unless you are in "mass production" of some type it is seen by marvel and others as "fan art". In others words they see it as free advertising of their holding and leave the little guy alone. When I buy a comic, Alter it and resell it it is no different that selling it second hand untouched. Pictures of actors also fall into this because they are public figures.

the superman celebration was great! not only did i meet some good people but was a good investment. day one i sold out of almost all superman stuff. every high dollar item sold but the highest. my sons of anarchy poster did not sell but word spread and some people said they heard about it out on the street and had to see it. that also prompted sales i already reserved my space for next year and started on more superman prep. i have another show in oct and decided for now that these 2 shows are good for now. thanks for all your incite , and again you are all great people.

i think i have posted before that Dyslexia has kicked my but my whole life. it is not that i can not read but long reads become a jumble of words that loose a lot of meaning until i have read it many times. this is why i always "wait for the movie". being a fan of Adam Savage of Mythbusters became a downer knowing he had written a book that i am sure would not make it to film. when the preface was released it took me 4 readings over 5 days to remember only 25% of what i had read. THEN i found he recorded the audiobook himself. i got it 2 weeks ago and it is wonderful! it was great to hear that i had so much in common with this "Maker" of so many things and learning many more i did not know that i am now on my 3rd listen. not because i couldn't remember but because i find it so entertaining that he reads it like he is talking straight to me. so weather you are a reader or like to listen to something while you work i recommend this book. i made this from a photo of adam while i listened the first time. 3D adam savage.mp4

(fan is 2400rpm and pipe is 4" = 83.7 cfm)

bought the stuff today to make it a bypass system. you just put that the priority before next paint day.
-
that is always a place!!! still use that for spray glue.

most of you know i worked out of half a 10 x 20 portable building. i had scroll days and paint days. well we got the other half open for painting but the fumes kept me from scrolling after painting so i bought an $18 4in inline hose fan. now i can do both. i plan to move it to use as a bypass system to keep the paint from building up on the fan when i am done gearing up for next months show. it has worked well enough i am also thinking of putting one in the saw room to help clear floating dust my vac doesn't get so i can stop wearing a mask. hope this might help others. chris

mine is "you never fail until you stop trying". but wisdom doesn't always agree. i do not want to stop shows but i also can't just throw money away. the Super Con space is $240. it is estimated the on average over the 40 years attendance has grown to about 20,000 people visit each day. this is a good test to see if forking out big money to attend is worth the investment. Adam Savage says "there is no failure, there are merely iterations that do not give you the outcome you expected".my next iteration is retail space.

i do have a full time job. i cooked for about 25years then did floor care and housekeeping for a few years. i then got the chance to go back to cooking, a job i can do without even thinking, and cut my drive from 25 miles each way to 7 miles. i picked up scrolling 2 years ago and first and foremost it is a hobby. a friend saw my portraits and asked what i charged to do one of his dog. after asking if i could make duplicates i charged only $25. i stack cut 8 when cutting his he was happy with it and i ended up selling 6 others for $25 each. doing shows came only because i local book store saw my work and offered to sell some and one of his regulars was putting on a Con and ask me to join. i made enough to invest in more projects and that brings me to the point i am. i guess you could say i am nervous about the next show and that is why i asked the question. i have chosen a niche that was vacant of scroll art and one of my favorite things so it is not "work" to sit and make original projects. if the shows don't to well i have a fall back at a local peddlers mall where i can get a large space for only $17 a month. i have expanded what i cut to expand my draw for the next show. i have made some puzzle like patterns i can stack cut that i have sold so made a bunch more for the superman con. thank you all for your input. you are some great people!!!

hi john, thanks for your input. i work a full time job and scroll on my days off. as i told kev i have done well on custom portraits. i have done 2 shows now and made back my investment but am definitely not getting rich. i have already paid for booth space for 2 more shows. if i do not do better i will not do another i have to pay to be in.
-
thanks kev, maybe it is because i am still new to selling. i started and continue doing this because it brings me joy. i have sold custom portraits for decent money but not so good at shows. how do you promote your sites? i have one but not a lot of traffic.

Ok... I am at a loss. We scrollers do things most of the public either don't or can't. Most don't think twice about about dropping 20 to $30 on a picture of someone else's dog. Or $20 on a 3in tall piece of plastic that looks like a hero they like made by a machine. But when it comes to our art of that same hero they balk at that same price for an 8 inch figure. I don't scroll to make money, o sell to make only enough to pay for what i spent to make it and maybe a dollar or 2 to buy more wood. How do you find the meeting point? It seems that if I only charged minimum wage for my time not counting materials i am still out of the price point. Any advice could help. Thank you, Chris

I had a lul in portrait ideas so too inspiration from the puzzles post here. I did a pattern search on Google and found some patterns. All of these together took less time than one portrait. Thank you all

the Joneses wouldn't let me take their picture, so i had to settle for "the Greens"

long time no see. sometimes life gets in the way of spending time in the shop. i did manage a few hours this week to finish a portrait i began in Oct. before my new knee. this is project for pleasure. on the left: John Green, author of "a fault in out stars" and "Paper towns" on the right, john's brother" Hank Green, author of "an absolutely remarkable thing". together they began several educational channels on youtube and a channel called "Vlogbrothers" that has built a huge community that raised 1.5 million dollars this past December for "Drs without borders" among many others. in the center: Ester Earl, one of the first members of the vlogbrothers continuity and one of the most loving people i have ever seen. her amazingly positive outlook on life could not be shaken even by her terminal illness. she passed away at age 16 but lives on in the hearts of countless people that never knew who she was until she passed away. you can read her story in the book "this star won't go out". you can also see how she effected John Green by reading or watching the movie "a fault in our stars" , a story John based on Esther.

i had a woman contact me for a gift for her son. he is a fan of the game Fallout. thankfully she sent a few pics cause i would not have known what i was looking for. one had a flag as a background so my pattern included a flag but i didn't like how it looked when i was done. so i cut the guy out, ditched the rest , and made a background with stuff my crafty wife bought the day before.
