  1. i am having a blast with this stuff. i asked what it might be called in another post and a nice member said it might be "layering". i searched and found that layering was stacking separate thin, mostly 1/8" layers of wood following a pattern then adding the picture/drawing to the layers then gluing the layers together. this "3D cover?" is a comic book cover glued to 1/2" plywood, planning and cutting the cover into "puzzle pieces?" then using the layers of the plywood to adjust depth and hot glue each piece back into the body of the cover. very few of the pieces go back in "straight and level". for example all of the arms in this cover are made flush with the body of the subject and farther out at the hands to create more depth. in any case i love doing it and have been lucky enough to sell a few to help pay for stuff to make more. the last picture is a jig i made to hold the body of the project to make reassembly much easier.
  2. if you want wood grain as a backer i use the same wood, if it is painted whatever color i use 1/16" melamine. it takes enamel and leaves a smooth texture. at lowes here it is $14 for 4x8' sheet,. but be sure to control the dust it can be nasty/ luan makes a lightweight backer you can stain any color.
  3. when using luan i tape most cuts into place with painters tape as i go along. this cuts way down on vibration and stress small frets. i also slip my fingers or a strip of luan under the cut before removing from the blade from a fresh cut and blue tape the back as well.
  4. i have a bad knee and i am very limited on shop space as well. i bought a cheap folding stool that i can hang up when not needed. but for me sitting helps me concentrate on just my cutting.
  5. i am told luan is used as a veneer on cabinets. none of the big box stores around me have it. just a local lumber yard. they even quarter the sheets for me so i can cut it the rest of the way down in my 10x10 shop. it is a very soft wood venerable to tear out so i always stack one more than i need.
  6. hey Brian. i love luan... about $13 a sheet here too. including the backer Tom cost me, other than time and a blade, under $1 to make. have sold 2 for over $25 each. it also absorbs florescent paints better than any other i have tried while leaving the grain intact.
  7. i had seen a post about the hawk not having dust collection. i guess i was lucky that the one i bought had a 7/8' hole right under the lower blade holder. but i bet this would work bringing it in from the side as well. made from a few PVC adapters and some 3/4" pipe i came up with this. i put on a cap and drilled 3/8th" holes in it and 4 sides to keep large cuttings out of the hose. it is connected to a used household cyclone vacuum that the belt to the beater bar has been removed. this increased overall suction buy removing unnecessary pull on the motor. this is plugged into my saw's foot switch. i like the cyclone style because 1) you can see when it is getting full and 2) it is only a matter of pulling off the canister to empty. it has worked better than i had hoped. (the photo showing the adapter under the blade holder was taken after cutting a 22 hole portrait without cleaning the deck after)
  8. due to "life" i had to leave a pattern on a project about 6 weeks before it was completed. the issue i had was more the stretching of the liner as i removed it from 1/8th birch plywood. it was a pain but came off clean. same time frame using 1/16" luan and the shelf paper tore out lots of fibers as i removed it. this happened with both time and detailed fret work. but luan is cheap enough i add sacrificial pieces on top and bottom but luck out most times and am able to use the bottom with some detailed sanding.
  9. WOW... you have a very nice work space. would envy be too strong of a word? i wish you great times with your projects.
  10. i had gotten some FD spiral reverse cut blades a while back. used one on my craftsman and took it back off... IT SUCKED!!!! little did i know it was the saw not the blade. i got a hawk vs26 and i loved the blade so much i just ordered a gross in 3 different sizes. LOOOOOve them FD's
  11. i have stacked luan 8 high to do portraits of family for xmas for family. painters tape only along the edges and shelf paper to apply pattern. always pull shelf paper across grain not with the grain. luan is perfect if you plan to use store bought frames. i also put 2 layers between two 1/8" birch plywood when scrolling rock stars. for these, spray glue and heavy pressure is enough to adhere it to a painted backer. i sell enough luan classic rock stars to pay for my hobby. all pictures are luan in this post.
  12. i have found something i like doing but not sure in what forum or category of project it would fit. i have found only one video / reference to it but it still does nothing to define where i might find others that do the same... or have i just not looked hard enough? 3D is all i call it.... any answers would help.... thank you
  13. i am kinda new here. this is my first post. after running across a scrolling video on YT i made as a Christmas gift a 3D'ed a photo of some friends. when my son visited he took me to a comic book store and suggested i try a cover. well, on the 1st one i tried i was pleased so yesterday i tried another.
