  1. Very nice!!! That net.....I doubt I would have that level of patience!
  2. Looks good! Keep pushing your limits. Just because you didn't get it this time doesn't mean you won't get it next week! Remember, it was a #KnownFact that a human being could not run a mile in under 4 minutes until Sir Roger Bannister blew that away. Hitler KNEW the Aryans were superior to all others until Jesse Owens quietly burst that little bubble in the '36 Olympics. Keep at it, and soon your "beyond my limits" will be your "warmup".
  3. Looks great to me!
  4. Beautiful tribute.
  5. I find putting the shots in a glass first helps.
  6. Wearing nothing but your undies, one sock, and a rubber ducky on your head tends to help, too, as much as the gun. Or so I've read....*cough*.....
  7. Just an FYI, all of those "cute" surveys that keep going around Facebook, they're all harvesting data from you. "If you had a dog, what would you name him?" "What flavor potato chip are you?" "95% of <insert state here> residents cannot pass this simple quiz". If the site linked has you putting in any data, its saving and selling that data.
  8. 1 gallon Ziploc bag. Drop the project in, pour in some stain, and commence to slooshing it around until no more pale wood shows.
  9. Nuttin' against Canada, but those things are a pain to cut. LOL
  10. I usually don't do holiday-themed stuff....holidays are just another date on the calendar for me, for the most part....some of them come with an extra day or so off work to play in the garage (if my wife allows).
  11. Not really sure if I have a good one for this contest or not. I was always the introvert of the family, preferring Mountain Dew to everyone else's DrPepper, sitting in the den reading vs sitting in the livingroom screaming at a Cowboys (or Rangers) game, going hiking instead of to the mall, jogging vs. basketball. So big groups of family just make me feel uncomfortable. No matter what holiday we got together for, though (Dad was career Air Force, so large family get-togethers were not very common), there was always food. Didn't matter the time of day, there was something to nibble, snack on, munch, sip, or slurp. And so....a Thanksgiving trivet. Steve Good pattern, 3/4" whiteboard, stained Minwax Provincial. Currently drying, it'll go to work with me tomorrow for my "holiday" desk display.
  12. Ver' nice!!
  13. Actually, I was thinking about whittling down the outer edges of the clock. But enlarging the interior for a larger clock body would work, too. My bad, I didn't think about opening up the interior, or I would've been more specific.
  14. Looks good! Regarding the clock hole being off-center, have you thought about just using your scroll and shaving down the edges of the circle to put the clock back in the center? Or use Scrappile's suggestion and replace the clock section. No sense in letting a good cut (sailor section) go to waste! Besides....any cut/drill is a good cut/drill if you can either a) use it or 2) learn from it!
  15. I have an old cookie sheet I was able to talk my wife into replacing ("get you a new one." **30 seconds later** "Done!" ".....that was fast.") that I use for larger stuff. I like the bag, though, if the pattern will fit, because I can seal the end, and then just flip the project over and over and slosh the stain or oil around until I'm fairly sure everything is covered. I've used both, though, the Ziploc just happens to be my preference for now. When I start cutting bigger projects (ie, when my wife turns the tables and says "get a new saw"), I'll have to move back to the cookie sheet.
  16. I attended one meeting of a scroll-saw club up in the DFW metroplex (then found out later that same month that I was either going to move, or lose my job...I hate interviews, so we moved), someone was displaying a piece they'd done the previous month, a dragon or eagle or something with a LOT of holes where feathers or scales were. She mentioned having heard or read the Ziploc bag trick and how much easier it was than trying to jam a paintbrush into all the little holes, invariably missing some, and having to deal with darker splotches as stain got overlapped. I thought it was genius, since I hated that part of finishing, myself, for those very reasons. Been doing it ever since.
  17. Hadn't looked under there yet. Just had the question pop into my head earlier today, and had enough time to post before I took the family out to catch a movie ("Venom"....unless you're a dedicated fan, don't waste your money, wait for it to hit Netflix if you really want to see it. Kinda disappointing for a Marvel movie, but then I must admit I'm not very familiar with the character). Thanks for all the suggestions! Any particular FB groups you recommend? I'm a member of Scrollers already.
  18. Some more Steve Good(ness) today! Been cutting stuff for myself (fun, testing, learning) and for my wife (self-preservation...occasional gifts to the wife help ease her willingness to let me spend hours out at the saw ), so I thought I'd do a cut for my daughter. She's into unicorns and ferocious warrior cats (its a whole series of books...never read them myself, but she's hooked, and I fully support a healthy reading habit!), and stingrays/sand sharks ever since a recent visit to the Austin Aquarium where she had the opportunity to feed the rays/sharks/turtles/birds (yeah....lovebirds, at an aquarium. Never understood that. Rays are fun, though, they're like little puppies, flapping up to the edge of the tank and trying to fly out, just to say hello. Or, more likely, see if you have any shrimp.) So, this afternoon was daughter-time. Steve Good pattern, one of the set of "You Quotes". Finished with Minwax Provincial. 1x12 whiteboard from Lowes. The cut was long enough that it barely fit in a 1-gallon Ziploc bag for staining, but it did fit, and I did manage to get all the little nooks and crannies coated.
  19. Probably all boils down to personal taste. I usually use a 1/8" BB ply for a backer, stained or oiled to contrast the pattern (if I BLO the pattern, I stain the backer Dark Walnut, and vice versa). The contrast helps the pattern pop. A Facebook friend suggested getting some opaque acrylic sheet for the backer, and running a strip of LED's around the edge with either a battery or a power cord to REALLY fire up the pattern. I have one that I've got planned for a bigger/better saw that will work perfectly for this, and can't wait to try it out.
  20. I've been doing a lot of Steve Good patterns for my wife lately (doing one right now for my daughter). I've seen various other sites with similar patterns, woodland scenes, cute little holiday patterns, stuff like that. My question is, does anyone know of any sites with good (free is good, too) patterns for more geeky stuff? Patterns from Game of Thrones, patterns of dragons (not necessarily Chinese dragons), patterns of Vikings and samurai and old West gunslingers, stuff like that? Things you'd cut and hang in the ManCave instead of the kitchen. Just curious.
  21. ::salute:: (those words apply to more than just the USMC, too) Excellently done.
  22. Finished with BLO. Question regarding BLO....how does everyone apply it, and what does one do with the excess afterwards? Best advice I overheard was to put your piece in a ziploc bag (if its small enough...these two were...barely...), pour in the BLO, and start rotating to get everything covered. Fine and dandy, works wonders for getting inside those tiny crevices that my paintbrushes always seemed to miss, but what to do with the leftover? Pour it back in the container, or dispose of it?
  23. The only problem with having multiple Steve Good patterns is.....figuring out which one to cut next.
  24. Steve Good's got a LOT of patterns that would work for you. Best part.....FREE! http://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/
