Woodcarving alongside scrollsawing???
DickMira replied to OCtoolguy's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Thanks RJ for the nice comments. The cub and the mouse were cut first on a 3/4 " panel of wood in the standard scroll saw manner using a pattern that I had drawn, drilling pilot holes, and cutting the frets all out with the scroll saw. After that was completed, I carved over the entire scrollsawn piece to enhance the appearance of the animals. -
Woodcarving alongside scrollsawing???
DickMira replied to OCtoolguy's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Thank you Dan for commenting on my work which contains mostly scrollwork with subsequent carving, called "Carved Fretwork". Some examples can be seen in the User Gallery of this Forum, on page 1, scroll down to Dick Mira. My new Avatar, a tiger, was just carved from a thick block of Hard Rock Maple, 9" x 7" X 3", that was given to me by a friend. This was very dense wood to carve and certainly not recommended. Most of my projects consist of wildlife subjects that are scrolled, carved, and stained with oils. Regards, Dick Mira -
Thanks for your super comments Dick. This was a wonderful pattern that appeared in Creative Woodworks & Crafts magazine, January 2005, "A Sign for the Faithful" with my personal modifications. Regards, Dick Mira

This project was completed on a century-old oak wood panel that was salvaged from a church in North Carolina that was started in 1921 with the help of my wife's great grandfather and eight other families. She and all of her siblings were baptized in this old church and family members are current members .. The church was demolished around 1959 when the new church was constructed. The panels from the choir loft were stored by a cousin for over 50 years. He knew I was involved in woodworking and asked if I wanted some. I accepted his offer. My wife now has a treasured piece from this special house of worship. The panel 's old finish was stripped and stained again prior to the scrolling. The grapes were created with crushed gems in acrylic inlay. The grape leaves were colored with a polyurethane/artist oils mixture. My wife was pleased to get the scrolled cross she had been asking for.

Thanks for your kind comments. Most of my published articles were in Creative Woodworks & Crafts and show a step by step process with the carving bits used. Unfortunately, the magazine is not publishing anymore and old copies are hard to find. One was published in Scrollsaw Woodworking and Crafts , Fox Chapel, Fall 2008, Issue 32, pg 56 and probably could be ordered from them. You can see a preview of the tiger project by going to their website, scrollsawwoodworking.com and putting Dick Miraglia in the Search area. The article shows step by step directions for creating a tiger portrait. I am not sure if the back issue is still available. By the way, you can send a message to me by just clicking the chipmunk and then hitting message which is private and more convenient. Dick

Good Morning, Gene: Thanks for your interest in my work. I have developed this technique for enhancing my scrollwork projects. After the scroll is completed, I use a power carver and carve further details, usually wildlife subjects and animals. If you wish to see more of my work, go to the User Gallery Album 3 to see more examples. You can also check my posts in the forum to see more projects or use Google Search for Dick Miraglia. Have a great day! Dick .

My wife needed a book rack for her large cookbooks. I made this one using two scrolled wooden charger plates on the ends of a large oak bookcase. Worked fine! She loves it!

This project was done for my granddaughter. Yes, it is a real departure from my usual wildlife but the request was for something very colorful. I used paper patterns of designer Mary Englebright's fabrics to cover wood carvings in a decoupage technique.

A very special job on this project, Kevin. It will be treasured for a long time by your son's teacher, who will always be grateful for the appreciation you and your son have demonstrated. Wonderful gesture with beautiful woodworking. Be prepared for more orders!!!! Dick Mira

Welcome back, Jeaheori. Thanks for fine compliment and congratulations on your book writing adventures. Dick

Purpleheart is very hard, stiff, and very dense making it difficult to work with. Purpleheart wood is one of the hardiest and sturdiest woods in the world. Working with it requires much patience and a slow approach when cutting making it moderately hard to work with but takes a glossy lustrous finish. Go ahead and use it. It will be the most durable part of your project. Regards, Dick

This scrolled Red Tailed Hawk is cut from a piece of purpleheart that is 3/4" x 13" x 11" and finished with a satin polyurethane. It is mounted on a 3/4" x 16" x 15" board that was finished with a hammered aluminum spray paint.

While searching through my archives I saw one of my favorite wildcats project and thought I would post it. This is a large dimensional project done on tiger maple. The individual plaques are one inch thick with raised carvings of the scrolled animals. The plaques are attached at varying depths to the supporting framework. This is ''WILDCATS OF THE WORLD"

I am glad that Travis selected this topic for the Challenge because it is one of my favorite subjects. Great to see all of these cat projects. Well done folks!!! This is one of my earlier projects that other scrollers might not have seen. "KING OF BEASTS"

Paul. I love the second one from the top. I only wish the pattern included the top of the animals head. Great work on all of them. Dick

Thank you, Brent, for all of your fine comments and your interest in my work. Sorry to hear about your medical issues and good luck with the upcoming surgery. Unfortunately, because of new commitments, I will be limiting my postings, my participation, and my time spent at Scroll Saw Village. Regards to all and have a great year in 2021. Sincerely, Dick Mira

Frank, it is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to say CONGRATULATIONS on completing your first carved fretwork Eagle. Eagles are one of my favorite subjects also. It was a pleasure working with you on this project because you studied and evaluated your pattern prior to starting, made plans for scroll cutting and carving ahead of time, and followed instructions for power carving and for color staining and finishing. Great job on the eye and beak. I couldn't ask for a more dedicated "student". Job well done!!!
