Fay Prozora Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 I made t his yesterday and it was fun but it was very hard to get the parting tool in there with out knocking the wood off the lathe. I used a combination of 3 or 4 tools to get this cut. It turned out pretty good but I did find a tool for $15 buck so I ordered it and it'll be fun to try this tool to cut these rings.. Enjoy Fay Quote

Phantom Scroller Posted August 1, 2014 Report Posted August 1, 2014 oh a captive ring Fay, what tool did you use, did you buy a ring cutter. Roly Quote
Fay Prozora Posted August 1, 2014 Author Report Posted August 1, 2014 I did order one last night Roly. I used a combination of 3 or 4 tools to get this done. First I marked with a pencil where the ring would be and then made a mark on the ends to round those into a ball shape. Then I used a parting tool to cut on each side of the marking for the ring. Then narrowed the wood down on each side of the ring and shaped the ring just a little bit on each side and then used the parting tool and the skew to make the cut. It was harder this way but I wanted to see if I could do it. It can be done but I can't wait for my tool to get here so I can try it with that tool. All in all it was fun to play with it. Fay Quote

Fay Good work Fay when the proper tool turns up you won't have to worry so much about the sanding of the inside of the rings because they will be clean cuts and very easy to do. well done you. You'll soon be combining scrolling with lathe work making stands for scrolled bowls etc Edited August 2, 2014 by Phantom Scroller Quote
