Fay Prozora Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 Just completed this pen today and I'm proud of it in spite of some problems with the acrylic and it turned out great for the very first time working with acrylic. This is the third pen I have made, but it is the best one that I have made so far.. I love my new pen! Enjoy Fay Quote
Phantom Scroller Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 Fay lovely looking pen the thing about acrylic you worry about how far down you can go before it blows out, just make sure you have a sharp chisel with acrylic and take it slow not to much pressure. I use a toothbrush to clean as you go because it tends to rap around the mandrel. well done you. Roly Quote
Fay Prozora Posted August 3, 2014 Author Report Posted August 3, 2014 Good idea on the tooth brush, will have to give that a try on the next one but will wait until the grinder gets here later this week.... Fay Quote
daddy_tindell Posted August 3, 2014 Report Posted August 3, 2014 Very nice...im not a fan of turning acrylic...stinks up the shop and gets everywhere. have made a few..my wife loves her pen i made her from it...but given the option i will take the wood everytime...lol keep up the good work Quote
Fay Prozora Posted August 4, 2014 Author Report Posted August 4, 2014 The wood is easier to work with and I have a purple heart pen on the lathe now. It is so pretty and I was afraid of the acrylic and I'm not sure what a blow out is unless it has to do with it breaking. It is different from the acrylic. Can't wait for my new grinder to get here so I can give the tools a sharpening and have another go on the acrylic...I only ordered 2 blanks . Thanks for all the nice comments Fay Quote

Thanks for all the nice comments Fay Fay, blow out is went it gets so hot and thin it disintegrates before your eyes, so eye protection a must. That's why I said slow and not a lot of pressure to create the hot on acrylic. Roly Quote
Fay Prozora Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 Thanks for the explanation Roly... I will go slow on the acrylic. I have some pretty bronze and violet color and I bet it will be pretty once it is done. Fay Quote
Clayton717 Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 Great job Fay. I love turning acrylic, but very seldom buy any anymore. some of the bought ones get "chippy" so I started making my own. If you want to try a couple of my "home brew" blanks Pm me your address and I'll send you a couple to try. Quote
