Clayton717 Posted January 20, 2015 Author Report Posted January 20, 2015 Nice work Clayton. I am just about to embark into the world of penmaking. I pickup my lathe next week. Any advice for a beginner? Thank you. Just like anything else take your time don't rush. Start with a couple inexpensive pen kits and blanks. I started on slimline because they were cheap and that's what came with my starter set. now I do 6 or 7 other types plus keychains and other kits. Just keep in mind for every different pen you want to make requires bushings for that pen and a drill bit. If you never turned a pen watch a couple videos if possible, it will help understand some of the steps from beginning through the finishing process. I use CA glue as my finish now(more durable), but started using friction polish. The polish is quicker and easier but don't hold up in y opinion. be prepared to get addicted and spend money. most of all have fun. Once you get started if you have specific questions feel free to contact me. If you need a few blanks to get you started send me a PM. I always have scrap wood laying around for pen blanks, and extra of my acrylic blanks I make. Here is a link to a pen turning forum, it as lots of advise and info in their library. This site has helped me with some questions. they also sell/ trade pens and blanks. http://www.penturners.org/forum/#community-forums. Rob Roy 1 Quote

I do manage to sell the rest. If I make one I think my wife will want I make sure she doesn't see it. otherwise I wouldn't have any left to sell. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote

Phantom Scroller Posted January 21, 2015 Report Posted January 21, 2015 Thanks, I'm beginning to see it gets to be an expensive endeavor. Craig it can be expensive to start with but once you have the kit mandrels, polish, sanding pad, superglue etc your up running and you'll get your money back on selling a few pens kits are coming down in price the more you buy the cheaper. Also as Clayton said don't show the wife the finished job or you can say good bye to it. Roly Quote
