edward Posted August 8, 2015 Report Posted August 8, 2015 Since I have quite a bit of inventory, and whatever is left on the last show of the year, did anyone ever have a clearance sale, or 1/2 price, just to get some money back that is tied up. What are your thoughts. edward Quote
NC Scroller Posted August 8, 2015 Report Posted August 8, 2015 I have held items for two or three year before they sold. You can never know what will sell from year to year. The only way I would have any "clearance sale" is if I was to stop making and selling all together. Even at this I would likely donate them to charity before I attempted to sell them far below market value. Jim Finn and amazingkevin 2 Quote

That's a great idea Scott,Last time i donated to a good cause was a fund raiser at a church i didn't even go to.Days later i was blessed with a good dollar job from another church unaffiliated with them.God is good all the time! edward Posted August 9, 2015 Author Report Posted August 9, 2015 That was just a question that was brought up to me, just curious, I had items that didn't sell for a couple years, and all of a sudden they sold.. edward Quote
JustLarry Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 (edited) I sold some items today that I have had for 2 years. I also do fund raisers. They have produced special orders for me. Even the items I just give away bring in special orders. Last sale I gave two youngsters each one of my "free hearts". Their dad said he had some wood at home he was going to bring me. Before the hour was up he brought an arm load of scrap to him/treasure to me cherry wood. And he received a free sign from me. He is a cabinet maker and said he would have some more scraps for me. rjR Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 I seem to give away more than I sell. I do sell some and give away a lot! Why not-- we are really not in this to get rich! Politics pays a lot better and no quality needed at ALL! either side of the aisle! Quote
ike Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 I will never mark my items down . I may allow people to bunch items at a discount, but not by much . I had a sale today and sold an item That I have had for 3 years. no 505 off sales donate it to the church or some other origination. Quote
Lucky2 Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 I have only ever had a "sale" of my items one time, after that one time people thought that I would haggle over my prices. If I didn't haggle over the price, they would just say that they will wait for the item to go on "sale" and save some money. After hearing that a few times, I decided that I would either destroy or burn what didn't sell if I got tired of looking at it. I do donate some of my work for worthy causes if asked, but, I will never have another markdown of my prices just to sell something. If people know that you will be eventually selling your work at reduced prices, they will just wait for the sale to buy what they want. Len dgman 1 Quote

When people ask if I will be marking down, I tell them there will be more shows down the road, and the prices will be going up! Quote
ike Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 I have donated things to charity and they sell them for what they can get. I give nobody a discount on a single item and for multiple items only if trey ask and never more than 10% on the s;smallest price item Quote
Puzzleguy Posted August 12, 2015 Report Posted August 12, 2015 (edited) Ed, In my opinion - It can upset a past customer who paid full price for something - a though might be to find a commission seller ( a store etc) who can sell your work for a percentage - their you could put a lower price to move something youve had a while - maybe help the humane society etc. I usially just hold onto stuff thats left to start of next year . if something doesnt do very well , then Id mark it down ( don't say that its 1/2 off or a sale -just lower its price ) and try something else ( different pattern ). odd but sometimes you just havent meet the person that it was made for yet - some people just fall in love with the wierdest things - once i made made a mouse and stained it green - it was the first thing i sold at the next fair. Jim Finn Posted August 13, 2015 Report Posted August 13, 2015 (edited) I made nine 28" wall hung wooden stars (not made on my scroll saw) for sale last year and only sold a few. I stored the left over stars for this year and in June 2015 sold all of them and now have made a dozen more. I sold only four last year and thirteen already this year. One never knows what will sell nor when. I keep all items that do not sell and continue to offer them. year to year, and eventually everything I make is sold. (I have been selling items for seven years now) I have lowered some prices to get multiple sales, but I do not do that on a regular basis. I make an new item and offer it for sale. If it sells easily I mass produce it to keep down costs. I enjoy doing this but I know others hate to repeat patterns I had a similar experience with some intarsia pieces: I made eight, sets of two, popular intarsia figures early in 2014 and sold none of them the rest of that year. I have sold all sixteen this year (the season is less than 1/2 over) at the same price. Go figure... I keep my prices low so I am rarely asked to lower them when selling.
