Charlie181 Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 I bought a box of misc woods off amazon and this was one of the boards. The wood I bought was domestic but sometimes they throw in an exotic piece. I have no idea what this is but its dense and very hard. Please let me know what it is. Quote
Scrolling Steve Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Wow !....Do not think I have ever seen anything like that ?1?.......Hope someone can identify it. Quote
Scrappile Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Not an expert, but my guess is "Leopardwood" http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/leopardwood/ tomsteve and LarryEA 2 Quote
dgman Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Paul's is a good guess, but it might be Satinwood. Quote
Charlie181 Posted January 18, 2016 Author Report Posted January 18, 2016 i think it may be leopardwood. Thank you for your help. I know one thing, it's hard as a rock and I went through 5 blades in 30 minutes cutting it. I don't think I want to work with it again. Quote
Clayton717 Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 I believe it is Lacewood, according to one article I read leopard wood and lace are very similar if not the same. Quote
Phantom Scroller Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Looks like it's full of beans to me. BEANWOOD. Scrolling Steve and wombatie 2 Quote

LarryEA Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) By the Janka hardness scale, Leopardwood is a soft wood. The lower the number the softer the wood Lacewood/ Leopardwood 840 Yellow Pine 870 Eastern Cedar 900 White Oak 1330 Cherry 995 Maybe you have 'soft' blades. LarryEA Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 Is it really wood? Does the edge have end grain? Man made composit. How thick is it. When you sand it, does it change color Quote

When you sand it, does it change color Yes, it's really wood. When I got it ,it was rough cut. The picture I shared was after planing. It was a little over an inch thick originally. The question on the end grain is a good one. It doesn't have rings like typical wood, but I can assure you it's wood. It splinters and did have some tear outs after planing. I haven't tried to sand it yet. Edited January 19, 2016 by Charlie181 Quote

tomsteve Posted January 19, 2016 Report Posted January 19, 2016 http://www.wood-database.com imo, the most detailed wood data base on the www. leopardwood and lacewood are 2 different woods. ive had them both in my shop and have some leopardwood left. there is a drastic difference in the hardness between the two. Sparkey Posted January 21, 2016 Report Posted January 21, 2016 Looks like lace wood to me also. I have some in the shop. It is very hard. Quote
Charlie181 Posted January 22, 2016 Author Report Posted January 22, 2016 Here's a couple more pics after I cut it. I don't think it's leopardwood due to its hardness. I'm not saying it isn't either, lol. I'm glad I'm not the only one that's befuddeled. Quote
Scrappile Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 I'm sticking with leopard wood. Not because I am an expert, just because I am stubborn. Quote
cdrover Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 It looks much like Birds Eye Maple to me, Very dense and hard to cut. Quote
Charlie181 Posted January 23, 2016 Author Report Posted January 23, 2016 I confirmed today it's lacewood. I took a sample to Clarks hardwoods in Houston. They said it's a very unique grain but it is without a doubt lacewood. Quote
Scrappile Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 Darn,, wrong again..... Glad you found out though. Quote
