jbrowning Posted March 13, 2016 Report Posted March 13, 2016 I got time to dismantle one of the pallets and this is how the wood turned out after running it through a hand planer. I really like how they cleaned up. I can't wait to get the rest of the pallets done to see what they are going to look like. Jim lawson56, Phantom Scroller and Falcon 3 Quote

Phantom Scroller Posted March 13, 2016 Report Posted March 13, 2016 Great wood for free, it's surprising what they make some pallets from. They are good from name signs. Roly Quote
125 CSL Posted April 14, 2016 Report Posted April 14, 2016 Just across the border in Texas a company makes hard wood pallets. When I asked why the company would use a product that seems to be a greater value then pine. Turns out the pine is the crop harvested for 2x4's and the like,..the hard wood is the offcut from the harvest. So lots of pallets out there made from oak, box elder, to sweetgum or magnolia. Quote
jbrowning Posted April 15, 2016 Author Report Posted April 15, 2016 I have been keeping an eye out for the oak ones. I really like the grain this last one had. Jim Quote
Jim McDonald Posted April 21, 2016 Report Posted April 21, 2016 In my job, I see a fair number of pallets and I have found book matched boards many times. I have some oak and ash in the shed right now just waiting on the right project(s). Quote

Jim Finn Posted July 3, 2016 Report Posted July 3, 2016 Very nice use of pallet wood. When I started out woodworking I had little instruction so I am very much self taught. I used pallets to make my first projects and mistakes. I worked as a sheet metal worker in Calif. and picked up pallets our sheet steel came on. These huge pallets included at least three 4x4's ten feet long and some four feet long ones also. The steel came from Asia so there were some exotic woods included. Appletong, eucalyptus, mahogany, oak, maple, walnut, and other mystery hardwoods. A local sheet metal company that does industrial/commercial work may have some large pallets like this. Even free pine, in this amount, is useful for a hobbyist. jbrowning 1 Quote
Be_O_Be Posted July 4, 2016 Report Posted July 4, 2016 I worked for a sign company and the sheet metal pallets mentioned above were so plentiful. I hoarded a bunch and built my kids an 8x8 club house, they used it till they out grew it now the guy down the street is using it for his kids. This is some of the best resources of wood you can find and you can't beat the price. What wood you can get out of a pallet justifies the cost of a planner,IMO. jbrowning 1 Quote
