I need some ideas

A friend that I met at a craft show many years ago is wanting a plaque to display on her front door. It is a golf bag with some custom lettering. That part is done. What I want is to make the backing look like a golf ball. I want to make some dimples and am looking for an easy way to do it. Do I carve them with carving tools or buy a special bit for my dremel? Is there an easier way? Or should I just cut some shadowing to give the illusion of a golf ball? Any suggestions are appreciated. Even from Jerry!  lol

 

Oh, the backing will be about 18" in diameter.

They make bowl making router bits that have a nice round curve at the bottom.  I wonder if you can use that.  Make a template out of plywood for the guide bushings and just make a shallow cut into your workpiece.

use a ball cutter on your dremel, it might help if you have a plunge router for your dremel.ike

Thanks Ike. I thing I have one buried somewhere. I may practice with it to see if it will work. I do have a plunge router for the dremel.

Brad, that is too simple. I think I'll give it a try. Since she wants it painted I plan to use poplar so it should dent pretty easily. What a simple idea.

Piece of cake ! google golf ball picture,copy and enlarge,glue on the wood and put the rest of what have you over the top !

I had thought of that too. Because it will be 18" in diameter I would have to piece it together and I'm afraid the seams will show..
