To make a backer board for your projects, I have read that you place the finished intarsia pieces on your plywood or Masonite and trace around it.  Then cut inside that line.

Question: how do you keep all the pieces from shifting around while you are tracing?

On a small project you can do it just with your free hand.  For a larger project you can only do part of it at a time.  This means you cannot keep a tight fit for all the individual pieces.

I know some tack glue all the pieces together first, but that seems to generate its on problems.

Thanks for the help and advice.

tips and tricks

I edge glue my intarsia together, then put it on the backer and trace around it. I then glue it to the backer.

Exactly what I do. I glue the pieces together as I go so I can get really tight fits. It often ends up slightly different size than the original pattern.

Use the original pattern aplied to your board blank then using a pencil compass trace inside the line, then cut out the piece.
