Rob Posted January 22, 2017 Report Posted January 22, 2017 Recent posts by PaulHD got me interested in pen making so I invested some of the profit from my last craft fair in the necessary tools etc. These are my first two pens in native New Zealand hard woods: This one is Kauri with gold fittings. This one is Black Maire with copper fittings. It was fun to dust off my old lathe and I'm sure I will be making more of these. Rob Paul hd, Phantom Scroller and amazingkevin 3 Quote
jollyred Posted January 22, 2017 Report Posted January 22, 2017 Be careful, pen making can be addictive. I have turned pens for several years now, and can verify that. If you want more information on penturning, I would suggest going to the International Pen Turners Forum, lots of nice people and information over there. Rob 1 Quote

Thanks Kevin. I missed a Hegner scrollsaw complete with market stall, gazebo, drill press, sanders etc. the other day and was gutted. Good scrollsaws here are hard to find. DeWalt do not even ship the DW788 in NZ. I love my Delta Q3, particularly the blade clamps but it does have a very aggressive cut being a "C" arm saw. One day I hope to get something with a more parallel action. Rob Quote

merlin Posted January 22, 2017 Report Posted January 22, 2017 Nice job Rob...................just got me small lathe to replace to crappy one I had and am looking at getting started at pen making........ Where did you get your necessary tools from in NZ. I have been looking at turning between centers instead of using a pen mandrel...... Merlin.............. Rob 1 Quote
Paul hd Posted January 22, 2017 Report Posted January 22, 2017 Hi Rob, Great looking pens mate. The Black Maire and copper looks amazing. That is another thing I like about pen turning you end up getting introduced to wood that you have never heard of before. Cheers Paul Rob 1 Quote
Dan Posted January 22, 2017 Report Posted January 22, 2017 Nice pens! I love the shape and the finish looks excellent. Is that a CA finish? Rob 1 Quote

Rob Posted January 22, 2017 Author Report Posted January 22, 2017 Nice pens! I love the shape and the finish looks excellent. Is that a CA finish? Thanks Dan. Yes it is CA finish (superglue) sanded to 12000 grit and polished. On the first pen I allowed too much finish to build up near the bushes, the second (Black Maire) pen was better. Hopefully I will get better at it with practice. Rob Quote
