Finish?

After polyurethane dries can you put lacquer over the top of it? I don't care for the way the poly looks. Thanks

I don't think I would try it.   I believe the solvent in the lacquer may work like a paint remover.   I'm sure someone with more Knowledge will give you a more definitive answer.

If you don't like the look of poly, why use it? I don't like the look of poly on my scroll saw projects. For a final finish I always use spray can Laqcuer. In fact I use semi gloss as I don't like high gloss. Laqcuer dries real fast, so I can apply two coats within a half an hour. After the Laqcuer dries, I use a folded piece of brown paper bag to smooth out the finish and remove any dust nibs.

The result is as smooth satiny finish!

I have never put lacquer over poly. I would think it would be like putting it over enamel  paint though. They don't mix and inter act in a bad way.

What are you trying to achieve with the finish?

What about poly are you not  happy with ?

I wouldn't recommend lacquer over poly.  I think you would be asking for trouble there.

 

If the sheen is the problem, there are easier ways to address that problem.

The customer wanted satin so that is what I used. But I like the shine lacquer has better than the poly. Maybe just my eyes lol. I will take advice given and leave well enough alone.

Using the same brand of poly you can switch to a gloss finish. That should go over the satin without issues.

Well I will offer up my 2 cents worth. I would do a test. Put the poly on a piece of the same type of wood and let it dry for 3 or 4 days then spray it with lacquer. I bet you will be okay. Most finishes not only need to dry but they need to cure. If you do the test please send me a PM as I would like to know the results.

Good idea I have some scrap walnut leftover from the project. I will go both ways & see if either one reacts to the other. I will Let everyone know what I find out in about 4 days.

Well the study has been done.  No you can't put lacquer over poly!

thank you for posting the picture of your test. I was just wondering about finishes myself, and you saved me some time. Up til now I haven't really used a finish other than the occasional coat of paint.
