meflick Posted May 4, 2017 Report Posted May 4, 2017 If you follow or check out Steve Good's Blog regularly, you will probably already have seen this information. (Steve's blog is a treasure trove in its own right! Check it out if you never have. He has a ton of free scroll saw projects to cut.) If you are remotely interested in beautiful wood work in Intarsia, Judy Gale Roberts is one of the premier artists in the medium. Steve Good visited her shop this week (wish I had known - I would have gone up to meet him in person). While there, he made a video of her work and studio. If you have never made it by her studio - this may be the 2nd best way to see some of her awesome work and where she does her classes. While her catalog shows her work, it does not do it justice, you really have to see it up close to appreciate the depth and detail she puts into her work. You can find Steve's video on his blog here: http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2017/05/judy-gale-roberts-studio-video-tour.html - even if you watch the video - if you ever make it to East TN area its well worth the time to visit her studio to see her work in person - you will be in awe and greatly inspired! Montserrat Posted May 4, 2017 Report Posted May 4, 2017 It's a matter of timing (I can only do it when my uni is not in session) and funds ;-) Quote
don in brooklin on Posted May 5, 2017 Report Posted May 5, 2017 I have taken the tour and met Judy a couple of times. It is definitely on the "Bucket List" Too bad is is so far for me so it will be a year or so. GrampaJim 1 Quote

Marg Which is why I have been telling her she needs to "video tape" her classes and put them out on line for those who cannot travel - they can still do her class even if simply online. I'll keep working on her! wombatie 1 Quote
Clayton717 Posted May 6, 2017 Report Posted May 6, 2017 I have been there several times, just to visit and buy patterns. Judy is very nice to talk to. It is worth the trip just to look at all her intarsia projects. Quote
125 CSL Posted May 6, 2017 Report Posted May 6, 2017 Watched the video, darn. Would love to be able to do faces. and that big Jesus on the cross, sanding out ribs,..Her sander set up I really like, better then the belt sanders I use. Quote
Rolf Posted May 6, 2017 Report Posted May 6, 2017 I had to meet Judy as it was on my bucket list. I took an Intermediate class in 2011. The class project was a Lion cub. Her class made me appreciate how the the right sanding tools make the process much easier. Judy's and Marianes skills and patience made for a great class. Melanie I think it would be difficult to capture all the little nuances in a video. When you have a class of 9 people they all ask different questions not so on a video. But having said that a series of videos on wood selection through shaping would be really great. Keep working on her. Beautiful area, although the area around Dollywood was not my favorite, but great if you take your family. My wife had stuff to do while I was in class. This what I created in her class added the details and finish when I went home. The wonder wheel was a new experience for me. GrampaJim and worbler 2 Quote
meflick Posted May 7, 2017 Author Report Posted May 7, 2017 Rolf - I agree that being there in person is best because you get the one on one with her and Marianne and get to see her actual work plus the interaction with the other students and their questions. Just being able to go to her studio and see all of her work in person is something not to be missed. Photos and videos do not do it justice. I wouldn't trade my experiences in her Beginner and Intermediate classes last year for anything. However, I was able to them both because I live so close. (I had hoped to do the Advanced Class this year but was too late - on the waiting list right now. ) BUT so many people can't afford to travel some distance, for some across the country, from other countries, etc. that video classes would offer a different kind of opportunity to learn from Judy and her techniques. As far as questions - she could address that in several ways - you could have a "FAQ" section related to that particular class/project. If you are familiar with "Craftsy" classes - she could set it up in a similar way. With that setup - you can email or interact with the instructor to get questions answered, etc. and I think you can "see" what others have asked/discussed on the same class. She has already started cutting back on the number of classes that she does each year which also makes it harder for people to learn from her. Video classes, while not ideal - would still provide a good tool for those who want to learn from her but can't make the trip, the expense, or get into her classes. They would make a great addition to her "classroom in a tube" projects that you can purchase already. I will keep working on her! Love your lion club. The wonder wheel was a new experience for me in her classes as well. We made the trigger fish in the Beginner class and the baby elephant in the intermediate class. They were both new patterns for her class that she introduced last year. Her advanced class last year was Einstein, and it is what she is doing in the May Advanced class later this month. She is introducing a new project for the Advanced class in the Fall (but hasn't announced it yet). That is in part how I missed out on getting into one of them - I was trying to decide which one and waited just a tad too long! Quote
