Sparkey Posted January 7, 2018 Report Posted January 7, 2018 Ok I have been looking at bandsaws for a while. I was looking at a 10 inch but want more resaw capacity. I am also looking to not break the bank. I am looking at a Rikon 10-324. It has a 13 and 5/8 throat and 13 inch resaw. All bearing construction and blade guids. A standard blade at 111 inches. I can get it shipped for $760. Does anybody have experience with this saw? Quote

I thought the same thing when I bought my Grizzly 14" with riser kit etc.. Those thoughts changed once I realized how much time it takes to resaw and plane boards to size.. my time is worth money at the scroll saw.. not being a sawmill, LOL.. Maybe I am just lucky to have a brother with a sawmill just up the road from me.. and my uncle has once right next door.. someone always has a board that I need ready made.. other than I do run it through my planer to smooth it out.. I had about that much into mine by the time I bought the extra goodies like riser block resaw fence etc etc.. Quote
Scrappile Posted January 7, 2018 Report Posted January 7, 2018 I have never own a Rikon but I have red good reviews on them. My friend is a turner and he has one. He seems to like it. I've looked at it, seems like a nice saw. Quote
Sycamore67 Posted January 7, 2018 Report Posted January 7, 2018 The comments about resawing is right on point. Resawing a 5-6" board is not too bad but you still need to run it through a planer afterward. Also, it takes some skill and time to learn to set up a band saw to do the resaw. And blades, are not cheap and they have to be sharp. I am not saying that it can not be done but not as easy as it sounds. Even I have done it but not on real wide boards. There are some who can make veneer by resawing and I am very jealous of their skill. Quote
Sparkey Posted January 7, 2018 Author Report Posted January 7, 2018 Most of my resaw in will be logs. I am wanting to cut the heart to keep the wood from splitting for making blanks for my lathe. I was also wanting to cut some thin rounds for doing fretwork in. None of it is for finish work. I'm sure I will find other uses once I get it. Quote

I found that since I don't like the time to resaw.. that I found I like making bandsaw boxes.. hopefully can make and sell some to help offset the reasoning / price for the bandsaw in the first place.. since I bought it with the intent to resaw.. tgiro Posted January 8, 2018 Report Posted January 8, 2018 If you are going to resaw with a 14-inch bandsaw, then take a close look at the Timberwolf 3/4 inch blades. These are the blades that are .025inch thick. Most 3/4-inch blades are .032 inch thick and do not bend well around a 14-inch wheel. If you are resawing small boards then a 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch blade will work. For bandsaw boxes, I've had the best results using a 3/16-inch blade backed by a Carter Stabilizer wheel. That's what I've watched Alex Snodgrass and the demonstrators at the shows use when they cut the boxes or those little reindeer figures. Sparkey and Lucky2 2 Quote

Sparkey Posted January 12, 2018 Author Report Posted January 12, 2018 I called Woodcraft to ask if they could match a price. They told me the bandsaw I am interested in will be on sale next month for $699. Looks like I am going with it. Quote
Gonzo Posted January 12, 2018 Report Posted January 12, 2018 The Rikon is a good saw. I have the Shopfox. It has a 1hp motor. I recently purchased the riser for it so I can re-saw. I have not had any trouble re-sawing at all. In fact, I look at it as a challenge, part of the woodworking experience I guess. $699 is a great price. You'll love the saw. Have fun with it. When re-sawing, three words of advice, take....your....time. Sparkey 1 Quote
Lucky2 Posted January 19, 2018 Report Posted January 19, 2018 I agree with Tony, you get the best results using a 3/16" blade, to make band saw boxes with. Len Quote
