scrollntole Posted August 24, 2018 Report Posted August 24, 2018 (edited) Has anyone developed carpal tunnel in their hand as a result of scrolling? I've recently been diagnosed and my wife thinks it's due to how much scrolling I've been doing. I'm not convinced, but maybe she's right (again). I'm just trying to get a feel for this from a good number of people who also spend a lot of time scrolling. Thanks ahead of time for sharing. Vin Edited August 24, 2018 by scrollntole Quote

savethebeer Posted August 25, 2018 Report Posted August 25, 2018 I got very bad carpal tunnel pain years ago from playing the Xbox. I had to remove the machine from the house. Then 5 years ago I started scrolling and I have had no issues with any wrist or hand pain. Bob bobscroll and Scrolling Steve 2 Quote
RabidAlien Posted August 25, 2018 Report Posted August 25, 2018 One of the big culprits is a regular, straight keyboard, the kind that comes with your computer. Switch out with an ergonomic keyboard....they make slightly-curved ones as well as those split keyboards everyone complains about. The split keyboards take a little bit of getting used to, but people swear by them. ChelCass and bobscroll 2 Quote
stevan Posted August 25, 2018 Report Posted August 25, 2018 First consult with your doctor. I had it but not as a result of scrolling, it tends to run in my family. It was so bad for me that I had to have surgery (both wrists but not done at the same time) For now, you may want to try sleeping in wrist/arm braces that help keep your wrists immobilized. scrollntole 1 Quote
ChelCass Posted August 26, 2018 Report Posted August 26, 2018 I developed carpal tunnel when I worked at Fords. Repetitious motion is the culprit, I was using drills and torque wrenches every day 10 hours a day. Scroll sawing you are constantly moving your wrists in different directions so this shouldn't be an issue. Are you perhaps holding onto you wood excessive tight when scrolling?? I have a tendency to do that especially on small pieces. Check yourself when scrolling and see if you need to position your hands differently. Quote
scrollntole Posted August 27, 2018 Author Report Posted August 27, 2018 Thanks everyone. I am using a wrist band and it seems to help, altho I'm not sleeping with it on. And I have noticed that sometimes I'm pushing down - holding down the piece - with too much force and my hand becomes tired and stiffens. Been trying to be more aware of that: just "keep" the piece down, not "force" it down. Practice, practice, practice. Thanks for all your comments. Vin ChelCass 1 Quote
