I have done a 'word within a word' pattern very kindly made for me by Wayne, but my question is, how are these patterns made ? I have a few ideas of things I'd like to make using this technique but am loathe to keep asking other people to give up their time to make me a pattern.  Any help gratefully received.  xx

I use Inkscape.  It's free, but if you haven't used anything like that, it has a bit of a learning curve.  IF
you download it,  do it directly from their site.  Don't go through another site.  Travis has video on the subject,
but it assumes that you are already familiar with Inkscape.

Feel free  to send me the pattern(s) that you desire.

Also, if you want to learn the basics of Inkscape, all you need to do is ask me, or the group, and you will get
more help than you can handle.

Brenda, I think most people design them using Inkscape (https://inkscape.org/en/ ) It is a free download.  Some may use Gimp, but I think Inkscape is the easiest for text patterns.  There are very good tutorials in the resources section that teach how to make patterns with both.  Inkscape  is simple enough that even I have been able to make a couple word patterns.

Take your time with Inkscape Brenda and don't give yourself a Headache, When I first went on it...It seemed I'd never get the hang of it, But I did, There is a lot to Inkscape but you only need so much of it to be able to do what you want to O.K.

I'm watching the video that Travis made on this , however when I try to make the letters go closer together he says ''hold down the Alt key and use the arrows to move the letters closer''  - my letters don't move,  HELP.

Odd

Did you have the line in between the characters?

The alt arrow key only moves it about 3 points ie 3/72 so not a big amount each time.

You can also control the exact amount to move the character by clicking between the characters and using the controls at the top of the tool bar. The A|A is the kerning.

Well, I've tried everything I know and I can't get it to work. I've looked at a few internet sites and they all say as you do but I still can't do it. I must be missing something or I'm the dimmest light in the collection 😭  I've even 'tested' my Alt key to make sure it's working and it is, how sad is that ?

YEAH !!!!    I  DID  IT  !!!       I was making a 'box' before typing but if I just click the  'A' onto the paper and then type without making a 'box' first then it all works fine.   🤣🤭   Sorry folks, my old brain takes a while to let the penny drop.  Thanks for all your assistance  xxx
