Sometime ago, I posted that I was not scrolling as I was working on a rocking chair.   Well, I am still working on it.  It is a real challenge but I am enjoying it even though it goes slowly.   The wood is Claro Walnut and the chair is done in the Maloof style.  The difficult thing for me is that there is no detailed pattern but just general sizes for the various parts.  I have pretty much completed the seat, armrest and legs.  I can not even begin to tell you how much time I have spent shaping and sanding.  I take off a little at a time trying to get a pleasing shape and have both sides of the chair identical.

I am attaching a picture of the seat and arm rests which are pretty much done and have the first coat of Teak Oil on them.  It really brings out the complex grain of this Claro Walnut.  The seat and arms have been shaped and then sanded up through 400 grit.  Several times, I have had to go back down in grit to take out some scratches but the chair is very smooth.  My wife is getting excited about the chair.  The next part is to do the head rest and back slats and the final part is attaching the rockers.  Both of these are fairly complicated to get right.

That is looking awesome and I can see why your wife is getting excited about the chair.  What beautiful looking wood you are using.  It will be a stunning heirloom for sure when it is completed.  I cannot imagine trying to work with out a detailed pattern to tell you each piece' dimensions.  Thanks for sharing your working photos.

This project was way above my skill set and had never done anything like it.  But, I wanted to try something new and difficult.  There are a couple of people who have posted very good videos on making rocking chairs.

I learned the basics from Bill Kappel as I went out and had a one week one on one class with him in Utah.  He has made many beautiful rockers and teaches classes.  It was a great experience.

My progress has been slow as I figure things out.  It is a great fun and challenging project.
